calculator says the fuel surcharge is 0.00?
$2.50 base
7.4 miles per gallon
$2.55 average fuel
=$0.00??? -
Everyone's fuel surcharge is different. Each company, broker, customer, etc. uses a different starting base to calculate a fuel surcharge.
Company A may calculate a base of $1.05 and give a penny for each 5¢ increase.
Company B may calculate also @ a base of $1.05 but give a penny for every 6¢ increase.
Company B may calculate of $1.09 and give a penny for each 5¢ increase.
The combination are endless.
They all use the Department of Energy's weekly results for the national average. Some may only go by a specific region of the country.
The increase I referred to above is the increase/decrease of that week's ave. Then take the starting base and figure the difference between the base and the current national average. Take that number and divide by the increment (5,6, 7, etc) That's the surcharge amount.

This week the national average is $2.586/gallon.
If the company had a base rate of $1.05 and gave a penny for each 6¢ increase, the surcharge would be....
$2.586 - $1.05 = $1.536
$1.536 / $.06 = 25.6¢ or just 26¢.
If the national average was $1.05 ad's that company used a base of $1.05, then you would get 0 as a surcharge.
Again, everyone uses a different method. The goal is to ALWAYS buy fuel at or below the current national average.
Hope that helpedPrimaryGal and jfrazie7 Thank this.
