When I start my truck little black flakes come out of my exhaust. Like black snowflakes. I was told by my mechanic that I need to clean out the pipes, like a chimney sweeper of old. Ive racked my brain on what I would use for that sweeping. Only thing I could think of was getting a ceiling fan blade cleaner and bend the bristles into a round shape. Any advice?
Plus: are these flakes an indicator of an engine issue? 1991 379, 3406b engine.

TGUNKEL and AtticusRoad Thank this. -
Why don't you just take off the albow at the bottom of the stack and clean it out there?
-
I used a rotary tool and a wire brush to clean out my uncle's stacks for him (he payed me 300$). They looked brand new when they were done

I think your mechanic is pulling your leg .
passingthru69 and Roger McG Thank this. -
Did the mechanic say why it was necessary to have the soot cleaned from your pipes?????????
-
Muffler belt must be slipping tighten it up. Go get a chimney sweep brush you can drag it thru sections. Don't know why it would matter its a b model its going to create some soot. I would be more worried if it stopped doing it.
H2oburymatt, Roger McG, Ruthless and 1 other person Thank this. -
Ridgeline: Good point. He told me that the heat and pressure would send most of the soot to the exit of the exhaust. Makes sense.
Roger McG: He didnt say it was necessary to clean them out. Just thought it should be something I do as general maintenance. Plus I wasnt sure if the flakes were a sign of something wrong.
Personally, I dont like the black crap on my stacks or top of my sleeper. -
If this is a serious question rain caps will help. The rattling might drive you crazy though. That or plastic pails when parked for a couple days. Mufflers will cut down on that too. But like the others said a mechanical cat will always be prone to doing that. My old truck got a lot of quick rinses with the washer because of that lol
Hammer166 Thanks this. -
I am being serious. I always liked the look and tinging sound of the caps as I grew up. I do plan on getting the caps when I cut the stacks a little shorter. It looks like King Kong took a horrendous dump on top of my sleeper (black soot running down sides when wet).
