Has anyone ever seen evidence of the driver shortage?

Osweiler makes $20 mil/yr, an Army Private with 2 yrs exp. makes $18,900. Something seems wrong with this picture.

 

Yea. U can see it everywhere. Why should school cost u more a year then the carear field u going into? Theres 70% more kids between the ages 21-35 who r in collage or grduated starting from 1985. As time goes on that number will skyrocket as baseic needs r going up in price

 

You are nuts. Anyone with experience in a decent field can get a job where they start from day one earning enough to support their family on. You are confusing starting pay with entry level pay.

 

Pick up any copy of plane and pilot. Most small airports have the most recent issue available in their gift shop. Lots of ads from every airline and aircargo line looking for entry level pilots...all offering around the low to mid 30s. Again, entry level pay does not equal the starting pay for an experienced new employee.

Side note, pilots only get paid for air time, not for time spent doing paperwork or preflight and postflight inspections. Or any time sitting inline on the runway waiting for their them to take off. Layover pay is also almost nonexistent.

I'm pretty sure there's somewhat of a Class A driver shortage in my area (central Kentucky). There may be enough CDL holders overall but for whatever reason they can't get qualified to get the job.

I'm talkin about drivers with at least 2 years driving with a clean driving record. My work history kinda sucks due to the fact I haven't found a regular full time Class A job I've wanted to stay with in about 10 years so I've kinda job hopped and will take a year off here and there. I had 2 good Class A tanker jobs from 2002-2008 but they both went belly up.

Anyway, the reason I think there's somewhat of a shortage for good experienced drivers in this area is that the last job I had about a year ago was at UPS seasonal as a feeder driver and the guy that hired me said he wasn't even hiring anymore but saw my application and couldn't not hire me. Before that I was at Southeastern Freight Lines and before that Conway Freight. The HR mgr at Southeastern said he'd gotten 20 applicants for the position and the hiring personnel at conway freight showed me a stack of about 50 applications on his desk and told me that's the people he chose me over. So with me not really having a strong work history of staying anywhere more than a couple years I'm guessing a lotta drivers have issues like health issues, not enough experience, recent criminal activity, tickets and wrecks and who knows what else.

 

Any driver willing to relocate will be able to find a job much easier.

You can't live at the tip-top of Northern Idaho and expect to land a $60k+ job w. Saia without going to Spokane.

 

Or even commute. It's amazing how many people won't even try for a good job 45 minutes away.

 

I respect your opinion and I don't mean to upset the apple cart, but on that theroy, why does my truck cost more than I'll make this year? Why does a house cost more than what most people make in 5 years? Reason being finacial aid. Is a kid that goes to a 2 year community college to be an electrician and graduates but still has to put in 4,000hrs of apprenticeship to be able to apply for journeyman license any better off than the kid who opted out of college and already has 2,000 hours on his apprenticeship making more more than the college grad? My experience points no. But they are going to go anyhow because they can afford to now and the schools know that and will forever keep jacking up the price. Health care same thing. They made it illegal not to have insurance, why would they reduce their rates.
