I'm not the teckie, but I seem to recall that the bridge motors were manufactured between '03 and '04, with the '05 motors being certified emissions. This is what I seem to recall, of course I could be wrong. If I am I will be corrected by someone .

If you're refering to an H-Bridge motor. It's a motor (electric) that can be powered to run in either direction.

IE...pull in to a parking spot...back out. Simple throw of the switch.

It can do this at any speed.

    lowbudget Thanks this.

Bridge engines were a Caterpillar thing in '02 & '03. Cat couldn't get their emissions down to the new EPA spec's that came out in '02 so they just paid the fines for that year. They were in the process of developing an engine that would make the EPA spec's but until then they used a "bridge" engine to hold them over.

"Caterpillar's bridge engines use cooled exhaust gas recirculation to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides and were introduced because Caterpillar's Acert engines, which do not use EGR, were not yet ready, company officials said."

One thing I am aware of is that you want to avoid ever buying one of these CAT bridge motors. They are real problematic. Just ask any tech who has to work on them. They are not noted for decent mpg. They just plain cost too much in maintenance and fuel to be worth it.

Like I said If I was wrong some one would correct me. Thank You... I was sure of the '03 'cuz I drove one, but couldn't remember if it was the '02 or '04 motor as the other year. I knew for certain the '05 was an ACERT motor, and they still have some problems with them.... I went from my '03 to '07 so I get much better mileage with it. I didn't have many problems with my '03 and they did replace the ECM once but I always got my fuel bonus while driving that truck..

late 03 to early 04 was bridge, emission lawns didnt take in effect till oct 2003 so pre 03 there was no such thing as egr on cummaparts or twin turbos or bridge motors for cat. Then late 04 started the year of the acert.

No,a Caterpillar MBN serial prefix,"bridge"engine does NOT use EGR.I don't know where you read that.
