SWR vs Resonance

    Why wouldn't it. I mean knowing why the radio is defective is part of a solution. I don't get how your techs don't see this as an issue while some of us do.

    While that is true - it isn't cheap to fix however there really is no comparison. The radio in that case isn't a "mass produced" item like a CB radio is. I don't see them being sold at every truck stop or corner store like cobras.

    Yes it is but the problem is no one seems to see how to actually tune the antenna or "match" it. All you and others seem to be doing is muddling the waters. Like I said for many this is too over their heads, for some they can maybe sort of understand it but won't get it. While others who want to experiment with it can figure it out, some of them don't do the math correctly and think they got a grasp on it.

    Somehow I suspect that telling someone that they need to pay a hundred bucks to have someone reengineer their defective CB radio to keep it from blowing up instead of offering them a quick 5-minute solution that costs $0.10 worth of copper wire probably won't go over too well in the truck driver community.
    To deliberately ignore the cheaper solution is kind of muddying the waters I would think.

    But let's be honest rabbi, when in the hell has someone actually offered a solution that costs them 10 cents?

    I haven't seen one and doing a lot of work last year, a lot of these trucks vary so much, it is hard to keep up.

    By adding more and more info onto the issue, I can see where people like Craig get frustrated without seeing any improvements.

    Most people don't care what the difference is between the two, they want to know what will make their radio work. I added the tech thing because I keep hearing how these techs have it all figured out but they don't.

    I think a better way of seeing my point is to tell people not to expect these super duper "ten meter" radios are going to be more resilient than the old garage sale cobra 29 or what ever $5 radio.

    Perhaps against my better judgement, I had a shop replace my stock finals to MOSFETs in my old cobra 25. Fortunately, I've had no problems, even when using my lil wil magnet mount antenna untuned, which defaults to around 1:2.4 on ch. 19.

    The moral of the story is if you have any old antique radios laying around you might want to hang on to them since they are more durable than most of the Newer radios.

    Let me throw out an example:

    Years ago I was into competition car audio. Had a little '92 Civic hatchback. I didn't care about listening to music loud (wasn't one of the knuckleheads you hear bumping down the block waking everyone up), I was just into it for the competition aspect of it. I was single then and had time on my hands.

    I competed in the "burp" classes, where you put a meter on the windshield and play a tone for a few seconds to let the meter draw a reading. But you have to know which tone to play. Guessing is out of the question. If you wanna win (and I did at any cost), you had to know the resonant frequency of your car. Not the box, the car. And no 2 cars are the same. So there's a long drawn out procedure to figure it out. Once you know, then you build everything to cater to that frequency.

    Turns out I went to national finals (MidwestSPL) in Missouri and I won my class that year.

    So I know how to do it right. But as I found out, trying to explain all the procedures to someone that just wants a loud bass box just bores them. They just wanna feel their teeth rattle. Don't need no stinkin' trophies.
