I have been pulling out of a certain lumber mill for years. It has always been a "keep dry" policy.
Well that is till there is a new sheriff in town who doesn't give a s#$t about the drivers. Now all
loads "must tarp". How do you guys handle a situation like that? And before you say "I'd go tell that son
of a #$%&# that", I need to stay in good standings with them. Just looking for creative ideas or "loopholes"
that I haven't thought of yet.

My biggest hang up is all the wasted time. Yeah curtain side would be awesome, but also pricey.
Just weighing my options on how to save time.

I hate tarping on sunny days, till it starts raining in the next state.

    Simple answer - Tarp faster
Less simple - Its what we do. Just gotta suck it up and tarp faster till you decide to go curtain side/conestoga.

First, this is flatbed. part of the job of flatbed is tarping. So a shipper or receiver request the load to be tarped, it gets tarped. The weather really has no bearing on that part of the job.

The other side of this, if the load requirers tarping, then the party that made the request should pay for the extra service.
If the service is not paid for, then they don't get it.
The it's in the rate, does not fly.

The question is the product wraped or bare?
I have rarely tarped a wraped load. more often toss on a smoke, just to keep the front clean. And a good staple hammer like this to make sure the wrap stay put.

I'm guessing you don't haul James Hardie or Trex much. Its wrapped and It's all tarp all the time unless it delivers with en 50 miles.. they do allow mesh tarps however and that makes it stupid easy.. as for customers that all tarp/all loads it's either payed for and I crank it out to be off and running asap or I load something else.. in the winter that gets harder.. so I suck it up. Don't get distracted and get the tarpping overwith. Having right sized tarps for the load helps.. oversized tarps just means more time tucking and folding. .

I'll throw a tarp on anything. Just as long as I'm getting paid for it. It's part of the job. And if for some reason I don't want to tarp a load, I don't take it on in the first place. But as an O/O, I have that option.

Don't haul James Hardie, After about a half dozen trys, they turned out to be a bad shipper. so no more.
As to Trex, and all the other composite manufacturers. yes haul loads all the time, and they do require tarps, they pay for tarps.

I guess the bottom line is, I will not tarp for free.

I'd rather tarp on a sunny & calm day than a windy & rainy day. Always fun when you're supposed to "keep dry" but it was loaded outside while raining hard enough for yellows, oranges, and reds to be on the radar in your location. Load is soaked before it hits my deck...and now I have to get out and fool with tarps in that crap. THAT'S what I hate. Sunny days, I enjoy being outside doing stuff.
