    One of my grandpa's favorite sayings was "Son, whatever you do, WHATEVER you do......Don't Panic". That always stuck with me. When you stay calm, you can think and respond better. That's sometimes difficult to do, I understand. But it's something to strive for anyway.

    Not nearly as intense as the Millis school though

    Been keeping up on this one, sorry to hear they cut you. I do have one question. You mentioned you were the only one in the class without previous experience. Were all the others drivers that had been out of the industry for a time and just there to get a refresher?

    Quit thinking about the instructor yelling at you quit thinking about all the what ifs and just simply concentrate on the maneuver you are trying to do. Most people in MTI have "0" experience in a truck but you cant get bent out of shape if you don't hit your marks perfectly, just make adjustments and you can do anything.

    And talking about having trouble backing up...just today I pulled up about 5 times on a slightly angled backing maneuver to park my trailer...it was almost comical...

    Yeah, I'm with you on that. Some days it looks like I know what I'm doing, and some days I could mess up parking in a pull-through.

  8. One had an uncle that was a CDL driver and let him drive it. One had been through another training program and the other was a OTR driver for a different company over 15 years ago.

    My dad restored an '84 Goldwing 1200 before he retired, and is working on a couple of mid-70s Honda CBs (I forget what displacement) right now. I've always meant to buy a little starter bike and learn to ride. I'd like to think that if I could figure driving a truck out, I could teach myself to ride.

    Zany I appreciate the very detailed reply to my question, thank you so much for taking the time and giving so much detail!
    I really hope the tech school CDL program works out well for you and you are able to get on with Millis or another company of your choice afterwards and fullfill your dream!

    1) I do understand about time away from family, I know that will be a hard aspect of the job but having been away from family at other times in the past in the military I have prepared myself mentally for this.
    2) True, they are very serious business!
    3) Yes, backing can be very very difficult for many if not most people. I'm blessed to have been driving trucks & vans with non-commercial trailers for about 15 years now, and while they are not near the length and there are braking differences etc. I have always been a "natural" at driving in reverse & backing up, so I hope that as I intensley practice those techniques it will make sense to me here as well.

    > I have been working at an Amazon Fullfillment Center for several months part time to make extra money and am a Lead on the TDR team (Trailor Dock & Release), and I can tell you even with some drivers on the roads for companies some people have a VERY hard time backing up to a loading dock. There is one company in particular out of Tennessee (I won't say their name) that I have witnessed a lot of their drivers have very hard times with this. Last week a lady driver with a man riding along tried to back into a dock, there was one trailer in an adjacent dock and then no other trailers on the other side for 5 doors. I was waiting for her to get this trailer backed in so I could "dock" the trailer and finish my process and she tried for literally 10 minutes and could not get it, then the she got out and the guy got behind the wheel, I assumed he must be the trainer and would bring it right in, but then he tried multiple times and couldn't get it...at this point the Yard Dog (Amazon lot driver) pulled away the now empty trailer that was in the door beside them....there was now NO trailers on either side of the dock they were trying to back up to...it still took 3 more minutes of trying before they could get it back!! Then I tried to engage the dock lock and they had not backed up far enough so I had to get them to pull back further, which they were very upset about because they had already begun unhooking the trailer brake lines etc. I know for sure I want to be better trained and experienced at it than that before I graduate school and hit the road!!

    4) Thanks for that visual, since I was in the military (Air Force & Air National Guard) and was a Combat Arms Range Instructor my last several years in I will know what to expect. As long as they are teaching me the information I need to learn and end it with a joke occasionaly I am fine with that. Wouldn't have expected that though so thanks for telling me! :)

    I appreciate the info about the hotel as well, since you didn't say it was a run-down flea bag place I'm assuming it was at least clean and decent! :)
