Back when I was a teenager, I drilled a hole in the roof of my 1970 Ford Ranchero and put a ball mount and stainless steel whip right in the center of the roof and used to talk from Santa Monica Ca to a base station in Silverlake Ca with a Johnson Messenger 123 and even a radio shack cheap $20.00 radio.
    Antenna means a lot

Every thread, no matter what the original topic is, turns into a UFC octagon heavyweight title bout, its quite comical really, childish but funny.

Ain't that the truth, it has been this way for a couple decades, but I think it is like a bunch of old hams trying to put down the others operating skills - My DX is better than your DX!

I think the main problem is a certain individual lacking the powers of observation formulated an opinion one day based upon a dream he had and now he's trying to represent that opinion as scientific fact.
muddying the waters by saying it is absolutely necessary to climb to the top of a mountain or connect a thousand watt amplifier to make it possible to talk to someone 45 miles away with a 4 watt radio doesn't mean that is necessary. it simply means he has never witnessed it first-hand and since he has always required an amplifier to accomplish that sort of distance he is making the assumption that amplifiers are necessary to talk that distance on flat ground which is absolutely untrue. the worst excuse for saying that something is impossible is because you have never achieved it yourself therefore it must be impossible.
it's impossible to rationalize with someone like that. he thinks he knows everything and knows absolutely nothing.

I would agree if this wasn't about radio.

Radio is subjective when it comes to proof, so yes much of the time it is a formed opinion and nothing more. You can fake a lot of things with radio, I know how it can be done because of the jokes we used to play on people.

I watch some of these videos from these "smart" techs and wonder what planet are they from, I not try to figure out what they are doing but how I can get my time back. Some you take it as gospel and no one can tell you guys different.

Your 45 mile trip is doable and yes I believe that you could at times, we've discussed the possible reasons why, but for the most part is not unique, I've done more with less and with nothing more than a piece of wire.
