Actually there is an art to it and some skill unbeknownst to most. Ther is also natural ability and a whole truck load ( pun intended) of common sense. I know guys that have been at it for years that still can't load a truck properly. Just bc you don't need a college degree to do this job, doesn't mean it doesn't have its challenges that a lot of people aren't up for.
Also comments made are not intended to be sarcastic. My questions and concerns are real. Not saying he can't do it or be successful.
As a professional and yes I mean professional that loves this industry and wants to see more independents out here, I would like to see them do it right and succeed.

To answer the question in your original post. We have been in the industry since 2004 (well my father) but leased on to Carriers. I have been learning for many years now. This is the first time we are going independent.
And no, I did not purchase a truck to begin this but moved a truck which was leased with a carrier. I have got a great team of mentors and mechanics.
I understand, I will face more challenges and might have a lot more loses but in the end it WILL work out.
