Okay, after quite a few years out of driving and not renewing my CDL I am getting back into it. Of course enough time has passed (13 years or so) and will have to obtain them again so that means entry level with a company taking care of training. Having 4 kids at home (ages 16,14,14,10) I would like to get home on occasion but also need to make enough cash for them all to live on.
My recruiter with Driver Solutions has told me both PAM and USA (tried for Averitt but they are not hiring in my area currently) are willing to take me on and get me in training Monday the 24th. With all "start up" companies I know I will not be getting the better loads to begin with as they go to trainers and/or teams.
I saw on PAM's site they handle GM and Wally-World (WalMart) freight but have been unable to find who USA pulls for. I am trying to get with whichever company will be giving the most miles with a looming recession and presidential election year (yeah stuff always seems to slow down when those happen-strange ain't it).
Also, if you had to start over and these were your options which would you go to work for? Thanks in advance for any hints or tips you can give.

For what my inexperienced opinion is worth...
I,too, am going through Drivers Solutions beginning in April. I chose to go with PAM because of their regional fleet, Decker Transport which is headquatered less than an hour from my house. Of all the research I've done both USA Truck and PAM have about the same reputations both not the worst or best but definitely a good place to start. Have you asked about Allen Freight Services, A.F.S.. They are out of Jacksonville FL and do alot of Midwest runs could help in getting hometime. Good Luck whichever you choose. There is a thread that was started by cjoe85. Just started with USA Truck recently and I believe went through Drivers Solutions, be a good place to get first hand account of USA Truck. -
Yeah I was looking at all of the ones that works with Drivers Solutions. Only PAM and USA are actively hiring drivers from my area (thanks for the advise on it though). I was leaning towards PAM initially until I read how the majority of their loads seem to be from GM. I ain't the shapest tool in the shed but I know how car sales go in todays economy. Car sales decline, less "product" needed to make 'em = my rear sitting with my thumb up an orifice I don't wanna stick it in.
Thanks for the heads up on the other thread too. I'll try to find it. -
Allen Freight is just one of the many companies owned by PSTI who owns PAM also. Been with PAM for awhile we pull anything from auto parts to Beer to Coke and Pepsi products so quite broad, my miles been running about 2700 on avg but if you want to be home every weekend then that will hurt your average but they have been very good about getting me home anytime I have asked, even if have to bobtail 200 miles which they have had me do twice

Thanks for the info. I will be one of those that only wanna cut for the hut once every 2-3 weeks or so. Although someone else said PAM hauls quite a bit of freight to Ga. so I hopefully can swing by for 30 minute quickies... er ummmm I mean 30 minute quick visits with the kids on occasions

From everything I hear and understand even from my recruter that PAM has slightly higher pay and better miles as to USA. But both are pretty much the same with the exception that PAM run's autoshift's and USA doesn't.

Hmmm, and my recruiter said USA has better miles than PAM lol. I guess it depends on who is paying the recruiter more to put a butt in the seat. I figure that miles are miles and being the noob I'm gonna get the table scraps to begin with ayway. I ain't expecting the 40k they are saying but I at least gotta be in the 28k range minimum. That should be doable with either of them I would imagine.

I'm like you, getting back in the truck in spring of 09. I'm trying to decide between PAM And A.F.S. I live in Cols, Ohio but might be relocating to Jacksonville Fl in coming years. Good luck with your decision and maybe I'll see you at one of the terminals
