Finished talking with Julie and Andrea and got my date set up for orientation. Going to be working the Flatbed Division.

I saw the thread on what to expect at orientation, but was wondering if anyone had any pointers as to what to expect for those who already have their CDL?

Also, about how long is TnT? I know it's 40,000 miles, but what kind of timeframe am I looking at?

About 2-3mos. Plan on about 3mos. That's in reefer through the busy time of year. No idea of miles teams run in skateboards, but still good chance you may train in reefer. Dispatches, load availability, shipper/receiver delays, breakdowns, season, etc. , not to mention your ability & any incidents that may occur, all will be varied factors.....so no concrete time frame.

    So, here's two extreme examples.

Quickest I got a guy through TNT was just under 2mos, but he caught on to everything extremely quick & we literally ran our butts off. He was totally exhausted by the end. But, he wanted to get through as quickly as possible, if he proved himself ready. Also, previously took him through PSD, and he made it through in bare minimum time w/trifecta.

Longest guy was my last, very slow. He stayed with me in TNT 7mos, his choice, and really, really needed it. I had the patience. His great attitude & perserverance prevailed. (He's doing great now, by the way. Lovin' life & impressing his dispatchers).

Remember, those miles ONLY a MINIMUM..... .IF you are deemed ready & have had no incidents.

Figure 2 1/2 to 3mos as estimate if all goes well & no issues or problems, not considering any home time you may or may not take.

    Good luck!
What you get out of it will be directly proportionate to what you put into it.. ..make it count.

Awesome, thanks for the response FullMetalJacket! So when I get to SpriMO, about how long will it take from orientation until I go out with a trainer?

Usually you'll head out with a trainer Thursday or Friday. Now that's all depends on how quickly your drug test comes, you passing the dot physcials, getting all the paperwork and computer work done, and passing the background check interview. Once that's all done your name will be given to a trainer who will then interview you to decide if you're a fit with each other. Don't be in a hurry to go with the first Trainer that talks to you, make sure you two get along and his training style works for you. Remember, you'll be with this Trainer for at least 2 months if not longer.

Usually by the end of the week, depending on the availability of instructors. There are much fewer instructors than trainers. Sometimes it carries into the next week. If that happens, you will be on what is called "priority list", ahead of students coming in after you.

They also have an accelerated program now for PSD portion that will keep you local, that they may offer if you show promising early ability. Will get you tested out sooner.

Primary goal of PSD is to assure you gain the ability to safely control truck & pass that test to get your license. Nothing more. Any additional learned here just a bonus.

Everything else will come in next phase during OTR in the TNT phase. THAT'S where you will learn & see what the "real world" reality of this lifestyle is all about. Usually a real eye opener to most, as a lot of preconceived notions will go out the window. LOL

Good luck. Keep focused on your goals & your head straight. Avoid the inevitable idiots at orientation that already know it all & aren't serious. You'll do just fine.

So I take it they make you do the DOT physical all over again even though I have my medical card and CDL? That's a bummer... but I'm not worried. Also, are there any trainers who drive manuals anymore? I'd prefer a manual truck, if possible.

I'm assuming that since I already have my CDL, I'll be skipping the PSD phase. I was lucky enough to go to a CDL school that did 1-on-1 student and instructor throughout the class. They had really strict passing requirements as well, and I luckily passed all my tests on the first try.

Thank you both for the information!

Yes on the physical. No biggie.

Plenty of manuals still. They just began the process of going to all auto's in Oct, so it will take 3yrs or so to fully transition.

Could get into either one. But, at least you already have your license. So, you won't have to contend with auto only restriction.

They do have manuals on the pads for practice & testing, for the one's who have gone out in autos, though. That way they can test in a manual.

Hah......beat him to the punch this time! :pottytrain2:

Me and two other guys who just finished our TNT training and upgraded to A seat, company side got 2015, manual trucks.

Most new guys I know are getting manuals since we also are getting the older trucks.
