I appreciate your response but this is a global problem . What U.S. politicians do will have little effect on a world market for oil . On the surcharge deal -just make sure the rate is adequate . If you're getting a good rate don't worry yourself with the surcharge . If the rate isn't good , don't take the load . If you feel the broker is shafting you , don't use him again and give the name of the shipper to another O/O that isn't prohibited from the broker's contract to contact the shipper directly . I know O/O's that have done this . They have also given good brokers a lead to that shipper . If a broker doesn't show you a copy of the freight bill send a copy of your settlement to the shipper and see what kind of a response you get .

I'm sorry if I seem like I'm stepping on someone's toes, but there needs to be some clarification about JoannH's post.

Nanci Pelosi is not the Senate Majority Leader - She is the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. Senator Reid is the Senate Majority Leader. And as the Speaker of the House, Rep. Pelosi controls what bills come to the House full committee for vote...and holds the power to keep the House in session, or call representatives back for emergency sessions.

Regarding the "extra vacation" and "kicking everyone out" as JoannH has stated...this is incorrect. Congress has always taken their summer recess during August and a week for July 4th holiday. Because Rep. Pelosi did not order an emergency session and keep U.S. House Representatives in session...mic's are turned off and lights are turned down and AC systems are set to minimum settings. But there were over 135 Representatives actively holding actions on the House floor during the August break - to no avail. Rep. Pelosi refused to answer the call of the American people and some Representatives to re-convene and deal with our energy crisis. Instead she went on her book tour (shows you just how much Rep. Pelosi cares about American citizens.)

If you're going to make statements...do some research about how our government works, to start with. Right now it's extremely important for professional drivers and American citizens to get accurate information - not what a person of group of people THINK to be accurate. It has a detrimental effect regarding what many others are trying to accomplish.

Also, my brother and I are getting many calls and e-mails for details about what's going on in D.C. Would you be so kind as to actually inform people as to which representatives y'all were meeting with - when those meetings took place - what was the topics discussed - what is the potential outcome of those meetings. Telling people you have meetings set up with representatives and senators, and nothing more is not what I would consider professional. Please start providing some details...people want to know.

Whether they vote now or back in July for the off shore drilling, it will not change the amount of time necessary to have oil flowing from these wells by much time.

You are still looking at about 5 years.

Well if they had voted last summer...it would be less than 5 years now. Also, there is a global market effect which will occur if we actually commit to pursue domestic oil production. Research "Synthetic Fuels Corporation"...you will find there was a dramatic decrease in oil barrel prices when our government took action to do something. The same effect will occur if America was to actually pursue domestic oil production now.

I will also point out, and this contradicts your statement of taking 5 years to bring domestic oil to market. The Bakken Oil Fields (also known as the Williston Play,) has hundreds of wells already at production level. The majority have been capped due to nowhere to take the oil. Our government continues to allow the utilization of oil imports to the tune of 60%. I know personally several roughnecks telling me about the Bakken Play (first hand knowledge of what is actually happening in the Bakken Oil Fields.) One roughneck is a very close friend and has informed me his team is now on their 4th hole in the last 18 months. So to say it will take 5 years to bring American produced oil to market is incorrect. You need to stop believing the propaganda.

How many drilling rigs are available?

    How long to build them?

    How long to site them?

I do not follow propaganda. Nor do I support either party. I am independent and have a realistic viewpoint.

I do not feel that 5 years is unrealistic. As far as July to today, 2 months.

If you really want to get bitter about it, look into what administration stopped off shore drilling and the make up of the congress. Clue it was a Bush.

As to how many are available I am not sure, but here is the active rig count. I'll do some research and speak with some people about the potential number of rigs available. I can state with confidence of being correct, there are more rigs available than are actively drilling.

Rotary and Workover Rig Counts as of 09/19/08:
    Total US: 2,018
    Offshore: 74
    Land: 1,944
    Inland Waters: 21
    http://www.wtrg.com/rotaryrigs.html

I know an individual here in town which does just that...builds drilling rigs. I'll drop by his place next time he's in town and ask. I'll get back to ya on this one.

Land based drilling rigs can be disassembled and reassembled within days. Depending upon the points involved, it may take as long as two weeks if there is a large travel distance between the two points.

Five years is not unrealistic regarding offshore drilling. I was only making a point about procrastination. The longer you put it off...the longer it will be before relief will be achieved. Just an issue of fact...that's all.

Congress stopped offshore drilling 25 years ago by placing a ban on offshore drilling in the government spending bill. Then there was an executive order banning offshore drilling. Congress has extended the offshore drilling ban every year in the government spending bill until this week. Because of a presidential threat of a veto if the ban was included in the government spending bill, and pressure from the American people, Congress has allowed the elapse of the offshore drilling ban by not including it in the current government spending bill.

My point is simply that both parties have fault here.

The off shore rigs in the past have been sold to other countries. It is my understanding that these rigs have been done away with. Besides, new technology is available to maximize profits.

I am not saying anything in anyone's defense.

I am not in on those meetings, I only know that meetings were set up for the two days after the convoy. The best course for you would be to direct those questions to Mark Kirsch or anyone on the TACU (truckers and citizens united) committee.

We've tried. Got Mark Kirsch's message service with no return call yet...as well as Charlie Clayburn's. I mean no disrespect, but shouldn't some information be put up on your site. I know you are part of the TACU committee, and should therefore be at least informed of who they were meeting with and times of the meetings. You must have some information about what's going on, shouldn't you?

People are wanting to know what's happening and y'all haven't provided anything. And your Illinois and Michigan director's vehicles being towed has raised a lot of questions. If y'all had free overnight parking at Fedex Field...why didn't your own directors drop their trailers at the Fedex Field? This is one of the many questions bro and I are being asked. Please have someone place some info up on your site.

Actually, you are incorrect, I am no longer a member of the committee. Due to some health issues, I could no longer put in the amount of time and work that was needed so I had to step back several months ago. I am still a member of TACU and help as I can, but I can't just have someone put info up on the site or pass along information I do not know.

I passed along as much information as I had. I haven't called them to give them time to do what they can while they have the opportunity. I remember how chaotic and exhausting the last events were and I'm sure this one has even more going on since it's really a 3 day event instead of just one - like the previous ones. After the last run to DC, I think it took Mark 2 days to return all of the calls, even with the rest of us helping.

I believe they'll be back Friday and I'm sure they'll get info up on the site as soon as they have a chance to catch their breath. It sounded like their time was stuffed and I'm sure they're juggling things as fast as they can. No disrespect intended, but I hope you remember what the last trip to DC was like and have a little patience.
