You'll have to get the sleep apnea and blood pressure under control. DOT doctors treat sleep apnea on an equal level as showing up to work with a hypodermic needle hanging out of your arm with herion dripping out.

www.rpmhst.com is a website for people with sleep apnea. Most companies want a 90 day readout from the sleep apnea machine to show you're using it and it's working.

Some foodservice companies hire "driver helpers" that only have a CDL Permit. Then they give you 90 days to get the hard copy CDL. I see their ads all the time for these jobs.

Why do you want foodservice? It's a horrible, back breaking, job.

If I got my permit beforehand would it be a good idea? Also, how long does it take to actually go from doc to driver at those places? There is an Averitt Terminal about 30 minutes from me. But, there are tons of LTL places in Knoxville. It is about an hour away.

6'6" 380lbs in a Prius. Trucking is a tough way to make a poor living. Obtaining a trade would be a better option for a young man of 29. Trucking isn't what it used to be. If it sounds like I'm discouraging you I am. To do it again for myself if I knew what I know now about this industry I'd wave the magic wand and go back and get a trade ticket. Electrician to be exact. Either way good luck to you.

I did foodservice before with Sprinter vans and loved it. Kept me in shape a little. Thanks for your help.

Millis Transfer has their own cdl school. It's kinda like foodservice; they haul beer and beer is made from grain. You need $500.00 for tuition and then they furnish meals and lodging at the school.

I would seriously consider that. If I lost a drastic amount of weight, say 150 pounds would I still need to do all the sleep testing? I was blatantly turned down a few months ago for a public transit job hauling disabled people in vans because I quote "Buddy you are too big you would have to take the sleep test and we can't afford to pay for it", was said in the interview. It sounded like discrimination but oh well.

That would vary based on their needs, sometimes those companies hire CDL students off the street. I doubt that Averitt would put you in a local truck from the dock, since they probably have OTR drivers waiting to go local.

I would love to run regional for Averitt. I just want to get on the road and out of that factory.

Some CVS Pharmacy's give a cheap DOT physical. Try to get a physical so you know exactly what you need to do; can't really get started until you have that DOT Physical Card.

I know a lady that will "run you through", and get you a card, but won't I just have to take another physical if I get hired on with a company like Millis?
