Roundabouts completely suck. The concept is great, but when noone signals that they're leaving, you sit there for cars that get off right before where you'd enter.
-
Well, the theory is that you yield to the traffic in the circle. The problem you noticed is due to going through it too fast.
One of those was built recently near where I live. The intersection in question, MD-24 & MD-165, had a flashing red and yellow, red for 24. I thought "Why not just change it to a regular signal, with priority for 165 like it is now?"
Well, the geniuses in the State Highway Admin. said that "the traffic volume doesn't warrant a full signal".
So I say, "so what do you do when the traffic volume does warrant a full signal?" "Tear out the roundabout and do what you should have done in the first place?"Working Class Patriot Thanks this. -

If a roundabout is made large enough, they're not bad. The farther distance between the road interchanges gives you more time to react to the cars. The smaller roundabouts really bite. If a car is wanting to go through the roundabout & out the other side it's almost a straight shot. About the time you let out on the clutch here comes another car.
Another really big problem on roundabouts with two lanes of travel is that the general public doesn't understand that it takes both lanes for a truck to get around the roundabout.
Just like any other traffic interchange, it only works as good as the drivers who use it.
But then again this is planned in Michigan, land of the U-Turns & left turns on red as long as they're not blinking... or some wild law to that effect.
One of my deliveries in Loveland, CO takes me through a double roundabout that's way to small. Here it is.

We have alot of roundabouts out by Statefarm insurance and the swift Hedquarters in Greeley. They are rated at 20 mph I belive they also have double lanes and also have blind corners were you can not see traffic approching unless you are right on top of the roundabout.
Ps that picture was take out by the loveland outlet mall right? I know there is one out by the wally world too.
I use to pull cars and trailers out there all of the time. I had one truck that had the stering wheel locked that I was towing out of there it was a little hard towing it with it taking up both lanes. -
I-15 in St George, UT at Brigham Road to get into the Flying J. It sucks. Actually, I refuse to stop at that hook anymore.

Yup, just off the big road on the Northside of US-34.
It's tough because the four wheelers fly through it & never use a turn signal. -
they've spung up like mushrooms after a spring rain here in Bend. If you stay on the parkway you never see them. But I take a couple of them to get out of the yard. they designed them with wide center areas that you are allowed to run you trailer duals on to make the turn. works pretty well. but I still avoid them if I can.
