Quick newbie question, so forgive pls. This is not the first time I've heard this. My situation is finally (after many setbacks) getting DPS road test this month. Everything else is done. In your opinion, are the above options still viable to someone so green? Am in DFW.

I know this is not the answer to the question asked. However, if it was me, and I was getting the road test, I'd sort of stand by on the questions. Whatever questions you had, should have been answered by now. And IMNHO, to ask questions at this point in your hiring process might be quite detrimental to you getting hired.
I will seldom give advice like this, because I do believe in getting answers to your questions! But, prior to getting this far along in the process.
Now is a good time to maintain a "low profile."

Do some research, look for LTL carriers in your area that do their own training. If there aren't any in town, look at the next town over, if there's one within thirty minutes of you (heck, I worked with guys that commuted an hour or better each way to my old company), if you get a job, you can always put in for a transfer closer to home when there's an opening. Fedex Freight does their own training, you just have to sign a one-year contract to pay off your "tuition". I don't know what the pay would be in your area, but they average $23-26/hr nationally for top of scale. If you can tolerate nights, road (line) drivers typically make more, at least here on the west coast. LTL can be a great launching point for your career, or if you find somewhere you're happy with, you could end up retiring there.

    Big Don Thanks this.
