It's interesting information. Very useful for the trends to your own operation. No guessing on that. I'm amazed at what I think I knew about a certain time frame a year or two ago then go check and I thought wrong. Memory has a way of fading like that but the ledger don't lie. You know exactly where you stand on everything when you do just a little simple math.
I would check average length of haul, average rate, deadhead percentage, loaded miles, empty miles, and several other stats on a monthly, quarterly and then yearly basis. It really isn't difficult to keep tabs on this stuff at all. Very good habit more operators should pick up. Takes a minute of your time fill info at each end of every load then 15 minutes a month running the numbers and looking at the math.
how much do owner ops make an average week

To all...
If you have a tablet...and a Google account, you can set up google sheets.
Use that to log all the key metrics on the fly i.e. date, mileage, load #, rate etc
Then do a quick check of whatever is being offered deviates from your desired rates or goals
No need to use paper anymore and it's free & on your fingertips....literally

Fyi...I'm not in trucking...yet...but that's what I'll be using once I'm in the game

It's similar to what I do on paper. I still prefer to keep this info on paper. It never crashes and it's always in the filing cabinet. I don't back anything up and I throw my old phones and laptops away after a few years. Kinda crazy I guess but I just view these things as disposable and having a limited lifespan.

@rollin coal
The app automatically saves that info into the cloud, so if u lose or change device, it's always there in your Google account.
It saves it real time, as you type...and uses very little data -
I know it would be faster. I use DDL to log on my laptop and I tell guys still running loose leaf they are nuts for the time they waste doing paper logs. But on this I will continue to do it the old way. I've had my laptop crash before and lose months of logs. That sucks. I know just enough to get by using computers and technology but I am not keen on adapting to every latest and greatest thing. I know what clouds are but really don't have any use for that. My system and ways work for me. When they don't I will change. But if it ain't broke there's no point in fixing it.

Oh man I thought I was doing terrible.
I am an owner operator with a Freightliner straight truck reefer. My income per month after all expenses such as, insurance, plates, phone bills ×2, dental benefits, fuel, I clear about $5500-$6150 a month. As for the work I do it's mixed dry and reefer ONLY LOCAL! 8 to 12 hours a day with about 150-220 miles a day. As for fuel I get it at half price with a fuel card from my company and is the reason why I make that much.
I do plan on moving into the US in a couple of months to start my own transportation company with 5+ trucks and trailers at once to begin. Aiming to make $5000-$10,000 a month per truck/trailer everything paid. Let's hope my calculations are accurate...........
As for equipment, I had in mind 2011 Volvos to start the fleet.
Maintenance should always be done at one shop and stay loyal. Building a relationship with the shop is key! -
Wow.....i don't even know where to begin with this one. I'm not even sure if this is a serious statement or not.
So I wish you the best and hope it works just like your calculations say. -
Stay where you are , it's a better deal.....Last edited: Apr 18, 2017
