    hi all,
i have a little problem here and was wondering if a few "old hands" here can enlighten me.
i have a cdl that i paid for myself. truck school was cdl mill with poor training. i thought i could use a company with a long training period to learn what i was not taught. well, after orientation and a week on a truck, i realize that i do not need to team drive for 8 weeks to get a 48 state solo otr job.
in orientation, they explained that "by the end of training, we would be team driving with our instructor"
in practice, we were team driving the minute i stepped into the truck.
now, i understand that that is how they pay the trainers the extra cash to be a trainer. but, i am was having problems sleeping on the moving truck.
i was building up an unsafe sleep depravation condition which i believe would become an accident waiting to happen. orientation told us that they believe it takes seven days to get used to sleeping on the truck.
when i brought this up to the trainer, he said "i always train this way"
and he would not change, because this is how he makes his money.
i am no longer with this company.
now to make an already too long story short, should i expect this from every company training program?
i drive well, and realize that i will not need 8 weeks to be ready to go solo.
what company has the shortest training period?
for maybe the first week, if i could get maybe 4 or 5 hours to sleep with the truck stopped, i could be able to get used to sleeping moving the rest of the time.
oh,yea- if i could get one sit down out of the truck meal a day, that would be appreciated...and an occasional bathroom break
i'll worry about showers and laundry after training if necessary.
but i really like driving the truck,if i can just get out solo

Most companies i know of basicly will have the driver next to you for like the first day...then start running teams letting you drive more and more each day...i honestly feel as though it's up to the driver...but call some companies...say "Hello...i'm intrested in your company...but a major concern of mine was if the training process is dispatched as teams...because you don't feel as though you can properly learn anything while your trainier is in the sleeping berth"...make it sound like you want someone there teaching you...keep the sleep issue hidden...because they just gone say..."well other students seem to have gotten use to it"...or whatever...and just maybe reject you...but by you making it seem as if you wanna learn and be good as you can be...they should do whatever they can to keep you and make you happy...i forget what company came to my school and said they don't do team dispatch training...but just call a few companies...but if all else fails...go to whatever company...if it's team training...then just do it...when you feel tired when your driving...tell ya trainier...and pull over...he either gone drive or yall sit there...if he complains...what he gone say?..."my trainee doesn't want to drive because he isn't properly rested because he can't get sleep in a moving truck?"...

I am going with Transport America, they dont run as a team at all, and on the road training is 3-4 wks, after 1 wk orientation with there trainers. And you are paid the whole time, even first week of orientation. Have heard pretty decent things about the company. Might go to there website and check it out.

I think most of "starter" companys run that way.But where ever you go,even as a trainee they are going run that truck as a team.Thats how these ''starter'' companys work.

Running team would be a big no from me,my trainer was a great guy ,but its
too cramped in the truck for 2 people, 3 weeks was plenty long enough,we did not run as a team. I drove ,he never left the pass seat .thats how training should be,
    it was company policy.

Hey slingblade, how are you ? I shared the deluxe accomodations with you at ASU.
Have heard a lot of good things about Transport America ,best of luck with them.
Get in touch if you can.

    training: all team driving?

If it is a reputable co there won't be team driving. When your driving the trainer should be in the jump seat. Not snoozing in the sleeper. When he is driving you should be in the jump seat observing. Many will run you as an extra logbook.:biggrin_2554:

i do not want to mention the name of the company, because i don't want the people here to know that i read all the posts here and STILL went with the company i did. what a mistake. what i find unusual, though, is when i graduated school i had pre-hires from two other companies... the day i got off the truck i e-mailed both to inquire about employment and have received no answers from either.
but, then again, i contacted all three when i graduated, with my last minute questions before choosing a company, and the evil one was the only company to respond

    NOT true!
Not ALL starter companies run trainees like a team, if they
run as a team at ALL during training.

    Imagine that and go figure.
IMO, it's better to squeeze the Charmine before usin' it.
Get a real feel for it.
Otherwise, it might cause a rash.
A real pain in the buttox.

Why jump on with the FIRST company that replies, rather than
    the best fit?
    Impatience?
    This is your future speakin'.

When I was with schneider there otr training was two weeks and none of it was team, mentor started out driving for fours hours then I drove about 8 my first day. Then after the first couple days he would drive maybe 2 or 3 hours then I would drive the rest. But there was a few days when he drove almost the hole day because he still liked driving to. But he never left that passenger seat. Now I am with swift now after a two year gap in otr they were the only ones that would hire me. There otr training is 6 weeks for a driver with no experience. But I was only required a two week refresher with them. The first week for me my mentor never left the passenger seat but week two we ran as a "half" team not running non stop but basically running about 18 to 19 hours outta the day.

This is not the way a trainer is supposed to run, you are supposed to be BOTH UP for the first two weeks, I went through the stupid training crap for werner and we were told we had to log a legal 50 hours observation on line 4. But some drivers are idiots.
