Think I read that their pension fund is on the verge of collapse? Maybe some of the older guys can confirm.

Unfortunately, the union car carriers set the rates, just like at UPS. If it wasn't for teamsters we wouldn't have benefits and the pay to go with it as a standard to beat.

The flip side of this is that the unions have often priced themselves out of jobs.

While money is very important to be able to take car of yourself and your family, I would be MORE concerned about the SAFETY & RELIABILITY of the truck being driven. All else would be a close 2nd..

The pension fund is in serious trouble due to the fact that there is a small percentage of people actively contributing to it as compared to many years ago. However something is better than nothing and most union people make enough to contribute heavily to a 401k and thus should still be able to retire with dignity. Those who haven't saved any in the 401k will be living on less. I have never based my retirement years on a pension or social security. While I plan to get something from both I will be just fine without either one.

I agree with you. A good carhauler is worth his or her weight in gold. What im talking about is exactly what you seem to be upset about. This so called anti-union rhetoric is not coming from days, weeks or even months of expierence, but years. We have been dealing with NON-UNION rhetoric for years. Being told because we were non-union, that we were scabs, or equipment was inferior, etc. Not every union carhauler had this attitude but honestly most did. If that's not you, cool. No one said you didn't work hard. WE ALL work hard. That's my point we work hard just like the union guys. Just was curious of why some union and former union car haulers treated us like we didn't belong[/QUOTE]
The best explanation I can give you is that there are bad attitude Jack As@es in every company Union or Non Union. I have worked with them at both. I have been taking a break in a truck stop in my UPS uniform and had a non union driver come up to me and tell me he worked way harder than me and was paid much less. I agreed with him that this probably was true but I asked him if this was my fault or his? I will not ever apologize for being an over achiever. I have waved at non union guys when I was union and never got the return so should I have assumed that all non union guys are jerks? No because I realize that in this big world we live in there are some happy people and there are some real miserable jerks. I don't choose to associate with the jerks, but I also have higher standards than the miserable people union or non union. I am now a happy well earning non union owner operator. I knowingly took this position knowing it was non union and I love my current position. I am the same me now that I am non union. I am overly confident and often confused as being ####y! I don't care if someone falsely assumes this. If I had loaded next to you when I was union I would have spoken to you once. If you spoke back I would have spoken to you every time I saw you. If you didn't speak back because you didn't like union carhaulers I wouldn't have ever spoke Ti you again, even after I became a non union Carhauler. I treat others exactly the way I want to be treated but I will treat you and others exactly the same way you treat me. I have no control over how others have treated you and if you treat all union members bad because some have treated you bad then it is you who is missing the point. Just my opinion and it is worth exactly what you paid for it! Nothing!!

My company has recently gone union. I am now a proud card carrying member of the Brotherhood of Washed Up, Old, Cranky Car Haulers Union.
Also, I voted myself in as the union steward so now I have to listen to myself complain about company management. Fortunately I get along very well with the owner of the company.
