Looking at some head work right now.
Not really fun...never done a head gasket on a semi and Volvo (d13) says it's running around 400 lb. so in short...how?
Engine hoist? Where are the mount points.
Thoughts on this? Pricey but I could see it's use in a lot of other areas. Plus it's light for what it is.
Something like this doesn't look tall enough to scraper the head off.
Still...where could I mount lift points? Just screw some disposable bolts into the top of the head and rig up some kind of hook/screw mounts?
Lol one breaks off it's gonna be a bad, bad day.
Good lord why.
How do you guys lift a head

Yes I used a engine hoist a few times. For me it was a challenge but it did the job. I was working on a Detroit series 60. I was working on a gravel lot so I put plywood down so it would roll easy. I also removed the front tire and then lowered truck back down. It all from experience from fighting with it the first time.
I lifted mine from the corners holes with bolts & chain. You can do it but do have a helping hand it helps especially putting it back on. I did it by myself be patient and keep everything organized. Be patientcabwrecker Thanks this. -
I've always used either a shop crane or my service truck crane. I have a bunch of CAT bolt on lifting eyes I use.
G13Tomcat, passingthru69 and cabwrecker Thank this. -
I've got my cousin, pretty sure he would be on board. Cement drive and we could get a cheaply engine hoist. 90% sure I've got a bad egr cooler leak but let's face it, on a d13 with 500k it could be the cooler and the head.
Coolant system drops 1psi an hour cold so it's an issue. Checked and double checked for external leaks. Haven't ran bubble check with water but...just prepping mentally now. Thankfully I at least have the mount/dismount order and torque specs for bolts, plus bootlegged manuals. -
We used a 2 ton on a isx. I wouldn't try it with one of those foldable deals. Even with the tire off you have to extend it out pretty far. Not sure of the weight on a isx,but we on the verge of tipping.
cabwrecker Thanks this. -
Yes indeed you are right I had to balance the weight on the series 60

No way to ballast it?

When the old one came off I was on the back while jacking it up. The guy helping pushed it clear till we could let it down some. We called for back up reinstalling.

A little pricy, but an investment in tools is never wasted money.

I'd probably spring for a day long rental before I grabbed that though tbh, I live in the semi and don't have a fixed address so it's kind of a pointless investment.
