Your not the only one that has this opinion, I can't remember his name but he was from either North or South Carolina and was on here often a few years back and also stated the 6NZ had head issues.
He also sold Petes and KW's on Youtube, nice clean units.

So thanks for all the feedback? LOL.
So I'm looking to do the swap into a pre-2000 379. The reason for the specific engine is I want to make the truck versatile. I want to run paper logs when I can or work for someone who wants an ELD which is why I'm eyeballing the 6nz. I haven't been able to find out if that engine is able to be hooked up to ELDs but figured the 3406e can not. Please correct me if I'm wrong on either. I've tried calling a few places and people either don't know or they don't know.
More than likely the truck will come with a rebuilt middle of the road mileage 3406b unless I get lucky and get a 3406e in the same manner but even then I'll just run it out until it needs a rebuild. I'm making plans for a truck that needs the mechanics rebuilt completely so I know what was done to the truck and that it was done by me. That said, I'll build it the way I want and the engine will be the last piece refurbished.
Let me know if I need to provide anything else to grab a few links from you, thanks.
In a side note, I've found out the 3406 blocks all mount pretty much the same so it comes down to the transmission and wiring. All the "spend a fortune" people don't realize you can drop a middle mileage engine in for the same or less than a platinum rebuild with a warranty. You have to spend money to make money, end of story.Last edited: Mar 11, 2017

You can run a ELD in any truck with an electronic engine. And find a 379 pete that's a 94 to 99 and it will already have an electronic engine and satisfy your no ELD desires.
And if you get an older truck with a mechanical B model cat going electronic is not a big deal if thats what you want to do. Everything is a bolt in ,its just the wiring and thats not hard with a compleat kit from kustom truck or mak industries. -

My 1995 5EK 3406 just needed a 1999 flash file to work with a EOBR.
If i remember It was no charge at the cat dealer, but I was having other work done at the time. -
I was digging back on some old threads and found this info from mr Haney explaining the history of the 3406e up to the c16. I thought it was interesting and may help with questions you have...
Here's a history lesson the first 3406E Model engines had a Cubic Inch displacement of 890CI or 14.6Liters in size this engine was introduced in 1994. The 964 CI or 15.8Liter 3406E Model engine was introduced in the last part of 1998. The 14.6L engine had a power range from 335 Hp to 550 Hp. The 15.8L engine was from 575 Hp to 600 Hp. In 1999 CATchanged the electronics system to the newer design that's used in the C-15and C-16, but still called them 3406EModels, because they didn't changethe block structure or the way it sealsat the gaskets. In 2000 CAT made quite a few changes to the block structure for better sealing of gaskets, with these changes they changed the name of the engine to reflect the liter size, hence the names C-15 and C-16. These engines were built until Sept. 2002 when the new emission standards came into effect. The C-16 was dropped at this time and the C-15 continued until the first C15 Acert was released to the public in 2004. The C-16 is a great engine and can buildtremendous amounts of torque whenmodified for power, but they all havethe same issues...........liner protrusion and liners settling if the protrusionisn't correct. Either of these motorscan be modified for huge amounts of horsepower with great results.........the C-16 will build a considerable difference in torque in a modified version than a C-15, but the horsepower seems to be very close to each other.Oxbow, rank, rollin coal and 2 others Thank this. -

The one company I'm looking at down the road needs the engine to work with "THEIR" ELD system so I figured I'm going to use that company as a reference point for the rest of the companies who let any age trucks lease on. I'm sure you have something to say about that and that extra info is great but not really what I was asking about.
And yes, I've read about the wiring kits and the such and know older vehicles can be hooked up with a little work. That won't be needed because I have a few options to run paper, as I do now, for a few years so I'm good on that. As for the engine, I'm going to run the engine in the truck I buy until it needs a rebuild and then swap it out for the 6nz into because that's what I want to put it into it. I'm sure all those other engines are nice because let's face it, a Cat is a Cat........and no Acert for me, thanks.
Thanks for getting back to me,.........but no links? This thread is done, stick a fork in it.Last edited: Mar 14, 2017

Shows your knowledge of these cat engines, an acert that is built right will outlast all the previous generations and do it more reliably at higher power.
AModelCat, E model Cat man and SAR Thank this.
