No. What I am saying is this:
If you can afford to get your CDL on your own then that is the way to go. If you have not the money to do so then company sponsored training is really the only other option.
Many schools do not offer financing UNLESS you take a long course, 540 hrs give or take. Then federal aid can com into play. But beware, you will be on the hook for whatever amount that you owe after financial aid. If the school does offer third party or in house financing, the interest rate is usually around 20% or more.
Remember, the loan is still in your name and on your credit profile. Do not let some trucking school recruiter try to convince you that its no big deal and that the companies that hire from them have tuition reimbursement. IT IS. YOU have to pay the loan every month and the company reimburses you a set amount. If you leave the company for any reason you still have to pay the finance company each month. If there is, for example, a 2 month gap between jobs, you have to pay the loan regardless. Then you are looking at another month or so before tuition reimbursement kicks in at your new place.
Not trying to dissuade you from either scenario. Just be informed. Knowledge is power. -
Getting a cdl on your own does nothing but create debt.
You will still need training at reduced pay so..you might as well just accept free company training for a year..pick a company..they all suck.morpheus Thanks this. -
Steel Dragon, yes, you are right and that is where I am at. I do not want the debt. You still have it until you fulfill your time obligation but being that you really need to stick with a starter for a year or so it is not a bad deal and you walk away clean and trained, hopefully.....
He sounds a little naive so i wanted to give him the reality check he needs.
Pro and con on each. He needs to decide which is better for him.Kwan23 Thanks this. -
Pick a company close to home, so when you get pissed off..its a short grey dog trip home.

Are you in San Antonio?

Labatt Food Service is headquartered in San Antonio. Don't know if you're in the hiring area.
Once you get your cdl from the company you choose and finish the obligation, maybe look at Labatt Food Service for more hometime. They only run Texas and New Mexico. They have 5 distribution centers scattered around. Labatt hires new cdl grads, so you'll be able to go there as an experienced driver. Don't know if that appeals to you or not, but something to research for the future.
"Labatt Food Service is among the top 10 food service distributors in the United Statesand has over $1 billion in sales every year. Labatt has 5 distribution centers and 9 offices and delivery hubs that occupy 1.4 million square feet of warehouse space across Texas and New Mexico. Labatt has over 1,500 employees."Kwan23 Thanks this.
