It's getting to be that time of year.....

There already is, I've been paying attention as a potential newbie, one of the more challenging aspects of driving, in my opinion...at least to someone who hasn't driven a truck yet.

This subject has been primary among my thoughts as I start in this business. I have been "forced" to change careers because of our economy, and truck driving is something that would have been right up my alley as a life-time career... but I had chosen the newspaper industry nearly 30 years ago. Bad choice as it turns out, but who would have thought? Now with a brand new CDL (unblemished MVR and background) I have been told I am "golden" at my truck driving school. I look at myself as inexperienced, not golden, and trial-by-fire will start in about a week. I am approaching this new line of work with extreme caution, and know I will have to handle my rig with kid gloves in the upcoming (and already here) cold weather. It will be my goal to keep my MVR unblemished, and I expect that will be one the greatest accomplishments of my life... I was good at what I used to do as a Pressroom Superintendent, but I am starting at the bottom once again, and cannot allow my past success swell my head into thinking I know what the hell I am doing when driving a truck. I look very forward to the learning experience, and the advice I get from those who have done it all before. Once I have a few years under my belt, and if I can manage to maintain a clean MVR/CDL/DAC... well maybe then I may consider myself "golden". I thank all of you in advance for tips and advice, for I am truly an FNG... however, I am an FNG with an open mind and willing to learn.

 

Our high country has already been hit pretty hard, and we got our first measurable snow in Boulder yesterday.

Just my own thinking as I know some of you SUPER TRUCKERS dont think the same way but if its to icy to keep me going where I want the truck to go then I don't need to be on it. I always keep atleast 2 days worth of food and water in my truck during the winter and have never ran out.
2 days of food isn't that much either. Box of crackers, some tuna, spam, or any other canned meats. Couple of cans of soup. and some junk food. Whatever you like you can keep just recommend stuff with a shelf life so you don't have it going bad. 2 gallons of bottled water.
If it needs chaining it don't move lol.

 

I like winter driving... Always have.. I know most will call me stupid but I like it... Just as I like driving in heavy traffic... Dunno why but it is something I always have enjoyed doing...

 

I've loved winter driving all my life.. but that was in something a tad smaller than a 379 (####, I'm gonna miss that rig)

As for food.. a trip down to the army/navy surplus store should result in some MREs. Self heating, and plenty of calories.

Before you civilians (and a bunch of military) all start going "eeeeewwww", if you've not had an MRE in the past 5 years (or more - I dunno, my experience is 3 years old), you should step back and reconsider. They're not bad. Certainly no worse than fast food.

They keep forever and store compactly. I've got a week's worth for the truck

 

I have a 3 year supply of MREs... enough to feed a family of 5 for 3 years.. Cost a few thousand threw the legion but well worth it... Anything happens I know I can eat.. Anybody come and try to take my food I also have plenty of ammo as well..

only thing about MREs is if you eat them for a few days strait you may want to roll your window down, you may pass out...
