I have a 1993 Freightliner Condor with a detroit 12-7. I'm having trouble starting it after some 12 to 14 hours of being shut down. Have to prime it with gasoline in the intake manifold to start. Have changed the return check and come back to the same situation. Other than that, it runs smooth on idle and has lots of power. Fuel filters are clean. Any ideas ??

    Don't shut it off..?

Try the garage. Maybe mods can move this for you...

Usually the check valve at the back of the head fixes this 90% of the time.

It's one of two things on a Detroit, check valve at back of head or fuel pump that's behind the compressor. I've seen fuel drain back both ways. Also there's better ways to prime a Detroit then gas

No kidding! good way to blow the head right off that thing. I remember using a gas rag over the air cleaner on wore out 2 cycles AND we built fires under the engines in Alaska but I don't recall ever sloshing them with raw gas.

Jace, I know priming it with gasoline is dangerous, but how else can I fire it up if it doesn't have diesel in the line? It eats up the batteries (and they are new). As I said in my first post, the valve at the back of the head is new. How can I check to see if it's draining back through the fuel pump. I don't see any check valves there. And how else can I prime this engine?

It only does it after being shut off for a while?
One place I have seen issues with is the two fittings that go into the fuel pump. I have seen one of them have a hair line crack and cause loss of prime but show no leak. Is your return line directly in head or have a short run of line and then check valve? You could have an injector or more that is leaking down as well.

Thanks for your input. Now, can anyone tell me how to prime the engine so it will start without having to use a little gasoline (I use about a 1/2 an ounce directlyu into the intake maniforl) ?? I certainly don't wsant to blow the head off

Crack the fuel line, plug the fuel tank vent, and pressurize the fuel tank with compressed air until fuel comes out the line.
