I'm looking to buy a couple units.
2010+ less than 550k miles. I have a full list. Which engine should I go with and why? Cummins ISX , Paccar MX, CAT C-15, Detroit DD15, CAT C-13. Which engine definitely NOT to pick. Any input appreciated!
Which engine??

10 to 12 cummins were horrible needing early rebuilds paccar was new with issues and if I'm not mistaken cats were discontinued .. you might be better going older or at least 2013 as many issues were had with early def engines

I say DD15 with proof of maintenance

At 550k trucks usually need lots of stuff to be replaced

I've drove a 2012 frieghtliner dd15 Detroit and a 2014 dd15 evolution given the engines one had 507k by the time my company traded it in the one I'm in now, the 2014 has 401k on it and I must admit neither leaked any oil besides regular pm maintenance I never had to add any oil never had any problems from the engine itself the def unit on the 2012 was its Achilles heel. The system needed to be cleaned often otherwise the engine derates.. Trying to pull 44k up a hill with 2/3rds engine power isn't a fun experience. No word on the 2014 yet since I've just had this one 2 weeks. In my limited experience I'd say that the two units I've drove with the dd15 were decent.

Only way you're gonna see a C15 in a newer truck is if it was a glider.

Early rebuilds were mainly due to extended oil drain intervals. I have a 2010 isx with 827k on it and it has not been rebuilt uses 2qts of oil between services (12k miles) runs like a top and continues to have clean oil samples. Cats were still available in new trucks as late as 2011. However, the sdp (cat) motors had a terrible time with the after treatment systems.

After 2011 yes....

As far as I know, Cat could only meet the emissions for the 2007-2009 engine model years. After 2009, no more Cat.

Yes but those emission standards were until 2011 when urea started. Cummins and Cat both had credits for left over motors which is why not all 2011's have def.
