It is clear Wanderer1 is happy to spread all the misinformation he can about a subject he clearly is prejudiced against.
I purchased new a 1984 9600 IH with a Cummins 300 9 speed. AirShield on the roof. Pulling loaded 48 and 53 vans for 600,000 miles the truck averaged 5.5 to 6 mpg. I then purchased a 1990 IH 9700 high rise with a 444 Cummins and a 13 speed. For the 700,000 miles I owned that truck it averaged 6.5 mpg. It was air ride and after I replaced the front spring bushings with roller bearings it rode as well as any cabover of it's era
Of course the 2000 Argosy with 500 hp Detroit and 13 speed I have now, with 1.7 million miles, averaging over 7 mpg for the history of the truck is by far the best. Air ride chassis and cab with other design tweaks to address all of the things drivers remember about 1970's cabovers, the last design most of them have driven.
If you don't like cab overs, just say so.

Misinformation really Bubba? I don't have to explain myself to you or any one else,but just for everyone elses info. Even though I (like most ppl that drove a cabover back then) was glad when dot allowed conv tractors to pull 53's, I still to this day happen to like some of the cabinovers such as my fave ,an 1988 KW 100 flat top 112" double bunk. Another one I drove was a Pete flat double 110" coe with a tag pulling a rgn,430 rears I think it was,fixed cab non air ride,spring ride susp ,white cat and a backwords 9. When we checked mileage on a longer run ,it got about 3.6 mpg loaded. Mty on way back it was getting around 4.7 or 4.9. I guess backslap was just my imagination,but the facts I stated are just that,facts.

Wonder if the 4.30 rears had anything to do with the fuel mileage. Being an 88 it had to be B model. They will do so much better than 3.6 mpg.

1991 if my memory is correct. 5 of us oversize going from WV to New Orleans. I was driving the Transtar II. Cummins 10spd. The 1983 362 and the Shaker are still setting in Huntington to my understanding. Running across 32 in Ohio the 362 would roll coal and flames if not careful. O'l Cat had the fuel turned to it. This was my favorite Cabover that I drove. My butt is not exactly built close to the ground so, nice to have the headspace lol. 1978, 400 Cummins 12513 / 3:90 Rockwells if my memory is correct, I replaced the power divider in my driveway. Cooler in the wall behind the pass seat was nice too.

What's going to break that will stop you...? Usually just a mechanical part that is not KW anyway. I started in a 1973 K100, 335 / 9spd, you can get a lot of stuff for them yet. I can still buy NEW parts for my 1961 International B160 at Napa and the International dealer. Have to have it shipped in but getting a tierod end from International was available. Napa still sells a lot of parts for my antique farm tractors as well, just need to find a store with an employee who knows the books lol, not the computer. -
In the days before 2000 there were not many propiatary parts for trucks. Cabs and interiors. Just about everything else was vendor common parts. I'm not sure the newer guys know this? They all used the same starter, alt, ac compressor, brakes, engines, transmission, rearends. You could get about all the same items from any manufacturer.

Back in the heyday of COE, 53's weren't even around yet. The std trailer length was 40, 42 & 45'. When they first came out with the '48x102" they were initially banned (northeast) for the most part for travel off the interstate, I know, as I got tickets for OW & OL on State route 9 in NY ('88). In all fairness though, most cops weren't overly concerned about it though, but there always was the exception, as in today....Intothesunset and OLDSKOOLERnWV Thank this.
