What's up guys finally completed my goal of obtaining my cdl class a! 2015-2016 was a really horrible time for me. I had been clean from drugs and alcohol for about half a decade and without going into a ton of detail I messed up after a chain of bad events (caught my ex of 4 years cheating. Multiple deaths in the family, etc.) I ended up loosing every material possession I had, my car, my job, and living in a homeless shelter.

Fast forward to today, I've got my own little one bedroom apartment, and I just graduated school with my cdl class A. I have one accident 24 moths ago (I hit a jersey barrier with my car, no injury, no others involved) I have no DUIs and no criminal record. What I AM worried about is my job history.

I haven't worked in the last year and I really don't want to have my last employer contacted because I left on bad terms. I am a hard worker and and honest person, I just made a mistake and I'm trying to improve my life and get a second chance. I'm not looking for a hand out or anything, I work my ### off and always try and do the next rite thing. I have a good friend I met through the 12 step program (I am very active in addressing my disease and mental health so I never end up in that position again) and this friend said they would have no issue with saying I've worked for then for the last 4 or 5 years. I know this isn't an honest thing to do, but I just want a chance to prove that I am a worthy employee, I'm desperate to improve my situation and get on with life as the last year or two has been filled with an incredible amount of pain and misery. Anyone have an idea of how this might play out? I'm really depressed and angry at myself over past actions an just want a chance to prove that I am worthy of employment. Please try and put yourself in my shoes before replying, I'm just a guy who made a mistake, I've had a hard life - suffering a lot of abuse at a young age, I've lifted myself out of homelessness and put myself through school, I just want a chance to go to wok and make something of myself. Thanks everyone.

Did you just get a cdl? Or did you go to an actually driving school?
You have to list your previous employers, doesn't matter really matter what they say. I've left jobs on very bad terms, but I'm honest on my applications that I left due to disagreement with supervisor.

Lying on a job application and getting your addict buddy to lie on your behalf is not "the next right thing". I'm a recovering addict too and I can tell you that trying to start over by building on a foundation of lies will not work out well for you. Your potential employer will be able to easily unearth your lies by checking tax records (you will be required to sign a release giving them permission to conduct a background check and credit check). I suggest you ask your sponsor if he thinks this is a good idea.

In all truth, not many people choose this career. For megas it's hard to actually fill seats, I've seen homeless guys who were out of work for years be able to find employment after going through Texas Workforce. Just be honest, apply everywhere, someone will give you a shot.

Yeah no I COMPLETELY agree with you, I know it isn't the next rite thing. I'm just kind of at a loss as to what I should do. I haven't worked in so long and it seems so doubtful that I'll be able to get a job because of this. To the other reply, yes I graduated from school with my cdl.

There is a local company that just hired my friend from school with no experience, I just need a car to get to the location, my friend seems to think I stand a good shot at getting hired there. I have my 2 interview at Applebee's tomorrow for a serving position, my plan is to save up $500 and buy a cheap car to just get me there. I have another friend from meetings who has a car she can not use, she said in about a month (she's got to get te title from we ex husband but it is hers) I could have the car and pay her off. Maybe the rite thing to do is to work a month or two at Applebee's assuming I get te job and buy a cheap car, then try my luck at this local company, it is driving tractor, pays $19 starting, home every night, and I can be more honest with my employer.

My school also has a great deal of success with job placement and said they are willing to help, and I have a state case worker who's job it is to help me find a job now that I've finished school.

Why not just go OTR for a year? They will bus/fly you to orientation, by the time you finish training you'll have enough saved for a car. CDL school vs just the license opens up a lot of opportunities.

I want to man, I'm just worried about my lack of job history screwing me over. I worked briefly at subway this summer, but it was 5 miles from the shelter I stayed at and just didn't work out so I left. Before that I drove for uber and was a real estate agent in boston (both of these for 3 or 4 years) and prior to that I worked at an ice cream/coffee shop (that was my "get well" job while I was saving to get my real estate license and move out of the half way house in boston I was at, that was round 1 and getting clean and fixing my life).

Doesn't matter, if you've already completed CDL school you are a commodity rather than a risk.
They won't put you through school with bad employment history, but they will place you with a trainer.
They make a lot of money paying a guy 500$/week for a month while charging a premium for team freight.

Like @ExOTR said, just say you were unemployed for the last year. It's very likely they will still hire you. If you lie on the app, they will fire you when they find out. You may have to fill out several apps, but someone will give you a shot. When I first got sober, my situation was similar to yours. My employment history left a lot to be desired. I managed to get a trucking job though

One word of advice though. Do not volunteer that you are a recovering addict. That is non of your employers business and carries quite a stigma in this industry. There is a fine line between being honest and revealing information that is not relevant to a given situation. Again, talk to your sponsor about it.

Your cdl is a gold card to most every mega carrier. Go through training and as previously stated save your money for a car.
