Need help we bought our first truck a 2012 cascades no note cash. But what do we do now we have no idea. Do we lease it on with someone who has team freight or run our own authority but I don't know what ins how to get a dot number or anything. If we lease on to landstar do they take care of all that stuff. If we run our own what will we need and where do we get loads from. We have been company drivers for 3 years so we have no idea what to do could use a little help here if you don't mind. Just paid for the truck do I just go to motor vehicle and get plates and where do we shop for ins. Sorry for all the questions but I couldn't pass this deal up 2012 cascades auto shift great shape only 312k on it got it at a estate sale for 11k it was her husband's very well taken care of. We like to run around 6 to 6500 miles per week. The biggest question is will we make more money and is there a lot of team freight all I need now is a trailer or do power only I could use some input good or bad. Thanks Rich and Doris

OK you got a truck cheap, go through it as if you were going to buy it to make sure it won't break. Don't buy into the idea that just because it has 312k on the clock it is a good truck.
Second I would lease with someone, screw the authority thing, get a company (like LS) where you can get help with building the business and learning what to do. I would park the truck now, get you app in to LS and wait to see if you qualify, if you do then get their insurance (it is a lot cheaper), then get the plates and go get started.
At this point, you can keep that truck moving a lot with a team. I wouldn't worry about miles with LS, I would look at revenue. Learn how to figure out your Break Even Point and judge each load on that rolling forward.
Good luck.wrench&ride Thanks this. -

We just sold out last year. Wife and I bought our first truck in 1984. My wife drove from day one and she drove the last load we hauled. I suggest leasing on to a carrier, we spent 27 years at Mercer.
I wouldn't worry about hauling a lot of "team" freight, just pick your freight, run as hard as you want, the occasional team load is just gravy. If you and your wife get along great, then being owner operators is a great choice. You can make some good money, take quality time off, have a great life and have some money saved up when you sell out.
My wife and I lived it for 32 years. Good luck Rich and DorisHighway_Executive and rollin coal Thank this. -
Thanks yes we get along great and we love it we both had successful careers when kids left for college we wanted to do something together well we tried trucking and we fell in love with it. Found when we came home after a day we were ready to get back out there. And I am very lucky I have a wife that's willing to try anything it's funny when she gets out of the truck at the truck stops she's only 5'2 and 98lbs Shea backs better than most she can put it anywhere.

Following... Best of luck to you both.

I am not clear on how much experience either one of you have. That is a key detail.

www.OOIDA.com is a business website for the owner-operator. I think membership fee is only something like $45.00 a year.
