Do you snore? Do you find yourself constantly waking up in the middle of the night? Do you feel groggy in the morning? Excessive dry mouth in the morning? It's all signs of sleep apnea.

It only gets worse as your physical health does. If you experience any of it I would get checked anyway just because your quality of sleep will improve a lot if you do have apnea.

If you call around you might find places that do the sleep study for free. I got mine done for free but I had to pay $900ish for my CPAP and mask.

I'd go to a different doctor. I had this problem couple years back. Paid for the physical, said thank you and drove 4 mi up to the next doctor and walked in like it was my first physical. Made sure I didnt answer any questions about being tired or sleep patterns in a way that would give them reason to doubt my ability to be safe behind the wheel.

In fact, I now see an Iranian doctor who just checks my eye sight, taps my chest and then collects bis $100 for the physical. Worth it to me to avoid the hassles. Then in Florida, we can go online and self certify our med card that way. Or stand in line at the dmv.

It's a simple fix that costs 1,000's of dollars. Needed upfront to get a job.
Go to another dr. Then if you feel it's a good idea get it done after insurance kicks in.

Sleep test are not cheap but they have some home test people can do. I'm not sure they are as good as a sleep lad because they can't see when or if you go into REM sleep. They also just give you and auto set CPAP so this kinda make up home test. Because it adjust are pressure with every breath

The whole sleep testing is very new. I remember going in truck stop TV or movie room and you drivers would fall asleep. If you listen you can hear they have sleep apnea. They snore themselves awake or you can hear them gasping for air because they stopped breathing. If you wake yourself up from snoring that's good sign you have sleep apnea or if you get sleepy in dark room. Plus all other signs like needing to take naps or sleeping on demand . Not feeling rested in the morning or headache when up wake up.

Of course it doesn't. It's no magic bullet. But IF you need it, you're much less likely to fall asleep at inappropriate times.

Not all overweight people have it. However, being overweight may well lead to you needing it on down the road.
In fact, I knew a guy who was really a skinny little fella. (This was back before anyone had ever heard of sleep apnea, let alone figured out how to scam people with it.) He would sit down to eat, and doze off mid meal. And snore like crazy. The first time I had lunch with him, I thought he was choking!

    Hey Old Fashioned!:D
I had my lab back in 2001. Had to travel down to Phoenix for it. (At the time, we lived in Grand Canyon Village.) Anyway, I had lots of misgivings about it. Figured I'd never be able to sleep while "being watched."
Turned out that I was so tired, that it was not a problem. They hooked up a few electrodes, and monitored my sleep pattern for a few hours. Then put me on a CPAP and monitored for another few hours.
The good thing about the way this was handled, made it very unlikely that any type of fraud could have been involved. My GP recommended the test. He was not tied into the lab. The lab did the testing, but didn't sell the machines. The machine came from a durable medical supply company in Flagstaff.
When we moved back here, I had to set up with a local sleep doc, and dme place. I've never had another full lab test, but once a year, I do a home test. I've had to make some changes over the years. But the machines available today, make my first CPAP look, and act like a dinosaur.

Two major indicators that you need to have a study. First, is being tired most all of the time, with drifting off to sleep when you aren't expecting to, such as reading or watching TV.
The second indicator is snoring. If you're mate has to tell you to roll over because of your snoring, you probably should get checked.

Well, without going through a sleep test, you won't know. There are many different types of masks. I use what is called a nasal pillow. Just fits over the nose. For mouth breathers, there are several different full face masks.

This is one of, if not THE best layman explanation I've ever seen. I called it a layman explanation, because of it being easy to understand!

    Amen!

I'd be kind of hesitant to go with a company offering the "free" study. Nothing is free in the medical world.
One of the things to take into consideration is separation between the sleep lab, and the supplier of the CPAP!

It really is. So it costs you some bucks! So what? If you need it, you will more than make up for the money, in feeling better, and being safer.

This is another situation that lends itself to fraud, along with dentists and audiologists. And just like checking out these, you need to check out the various sleep doctors, labs and DME supply companies.
Get online and check them all out. Most states have websites where you can check up on them. Also there's many websites that provide information on doctors and other medical suppliers.

There's one more thing I'd like to mention here. If you've waded through to this point, just give me a minute more, please.
I've heard all of the complaints such as, "I can't stand to wear the mask!" "I'll never be able to sleep with it on." "I sleep on my face, so I can't wear a mask."
My response to this is sort of like it is to using seat belts. You can come up with excuses until you're blue in the face. (Bad pun...) But the fact is, that you can get used to it. And if you need it, you will find that it's well worth the time it takes to get used to it, the time it takes to adjust the mask for optimum comfort, and the time it takes to keep the apparatus clean.
    OK, I'm done now.....
(except for an edit for spelling...)
