Is it alright to turn the engine off when truck is doing a passive regeneration?

Yep. You're just postponing something that has to be completed, and in fact turning it off may just cost you more time later. If you're going to idle all night, why turn it off during a region in then morning. That's why I'm glad we have APU's and a no-idle policy. We don't have regen issues.

 

If you won't let it Regen then the engine may derate or shutdown completely. I had my engine shutdown twice because I didn't do the active Regen it was requesting. I wanted to wait until I had parked for my 10hr break to start the Regen but the ECU didn't like my plan. It shutdown once while creeping in traffic on the GWB and again on the NJ tpke.

I learned my lesson that day.

Had mine derate and shut down between SLC and Boise on a steep grade. Going up. Imagine losing all power and power steering and rolling backward on a grade while you try to get out of the road to do a regen.

Do the #### regen. In fact try to do one even if it doesn't say you need to.

 

Whatever you do, be sure to park next to sleeping truckers before starting your regen. Better yet, in the fuel island at 8:00 am at a Love's.

 

What rpm are you idling at overnight? Should bump the rpm up to 1,000 or you'll clog the filters. That may be why it wants to do a regen first thing in the morning.

 

Some trucks (mine) will shut the regen process off when kicking the idle up with the cruise. I know this cause mine had a 5min idle shut down timer so had to set the cruise to keep it running. But had my shop turn that off so now if it idles all night it will kick its self up to do a regen if needed. This is on a 2013 ISX.

Maybe he meant the DPF. You would think by now in 2017, they would make the dpf more efficient and need less regens. I know drivers with new trucks and have the smoke pouring out doing a regen. Doesnt look very air friendly
