I hate def.
After I drive in the morning for a few minutes after a ten hour break with the engine having idled all night I notice the engine starts revving on its own and the exhaust light comes on. This goes on for half an hour or so and if I turn the engine off then the engine temperature gauge goes way up. Do I have to keep the engine idling while it is doing this to keep the engine from getting damaged?
Is it alright to turn the engine off when truck is doing a passive regeneration?

Yep. You're just postponing something that has to be completed, and in fact turning it off may just cost you more time later. If you're going to idle all night, why turn it off during a region in then morning. That's why I'm glad we have APU's and a no-idle policy. We don't have regen issues.

If you won't let it Regen then the engine may derate or shutdown completely. I had my engine shutdown twice because I didn't do the active Regen it was requesting. I wanted to wait until I had parked for my 10hr break to start the Regen but the ECU didn't like my plan. It shutdown once while creeping in traffic on the GWB and again on the NJ tpke.

Had mine derate and shut down between SLC and Boise on a steep grade. Going up. Imagine losing all power and power steering and rolling backward on a grade while you try to get out of the road to do a regen.
Do the #### regen. In fact try to do one even if it doesn't say you need to.Lepton1 Thanks this. -
Whatever you do, be sure to park next to sleeping truckers before starting your regen. Better yet, in the fuel island at 8:00 am at a Love's.
