this says it all(r==requirements or r==registry)
you can get your trailer if total vehicle weight is not more than 26,000lbs

the catch is the gvwr(registry)being a new registration.
it can be what ever you say it is... as long as the combined weight is not more than 26,000lbs
since it is your own property...not involved with any commerce you can declare its "rating" whatever you wish...for permit only

Not necessarily true. The police when they pull you over, the first thing they check is the gvwr. You can be sure they know the rating of the semi and the trailer.

does not matter legally...the rating does not matter when it is personal transport...a temporary registration that you declare is all that is required.
the first thing they are going to ask you is "drivers license and REGISTRATION and insurance "

It also says a vehicle with a GVWR of 16,000 lbs. or less towing the trailer . You can bet a tractor GVWR is over 16,000 lbs.

Yeah , that's crazy . People that never hauled anything bigger than a Honda can rent the biggest U-Haul . But what about that "within the State of Illinois" stipulation ? If someone with an Illinois Class D wanted to move out of state would they be in violation if they crossed the state line driving a rental truck over 16,000 lbs. GVWR ?

What the within Illinios means, is that you have a valid license in the state to do this when not commercial. If you leave the state the other states honor the drivers license unless commercial.

you could theorize on this all day but you would ned to call the states and find out. every state will be different.

personally I'd say you can't but I can se where they are thinking mabey if it's registered private.. i jus don't know
