It's a shame that companies like stevens has to treat the new drivers as well as the veteran drivers like crap but unfortunately most companies are that way.It just proves to me that drivers to them are nothing but low life trash and to me the corporate staff are nothing but low life idiots.

Because this information is outdated, I'll update it with fresh data.

In fact you'll be earning $50 a day ($350/wk) provided you'll make it through medical, road test and background/employment history check.

No. They won't "help you out". They WILL get you a bus ticket they'll pay for and if you're lazy and spoiled as I am, you'll buy a plane ticket and they will reimburse you up to $200 the next wednesday.
Again, you have to make it through all checks.

I didn't have to sign any "promissory note" and they provided me with everything I needed.
When I got there, I've had $15 in my wallet.
When I got on the truck after a week, I STILL had my $15!

That applies only for those who are getting their CDL through Stevens CDL school. (c'mon that's common sense)
If you already have CDL from your state, you don't have to change it back and forth.

And what is wrong with that? All schools are more or less like that.
If you have the money, you won't need a loan right? And 18% tells me that you credit sux. You don't have to get a loan from them you know? Get a loan from your bank an get better interest rate. Oh. I forgot. Your credit sux. So what's this complaint about again?
They will get you a loan eve if nobody else would and you still complaining?
Get your CDL through you local college. Usualy they charge a fraction of the price of Stevens or Roadmaster.

Not my experience. I didn't meet any1 named Carol so I can't comment this statement.

I slept almost a week in Crossland and one night in Howard Johnson. Clean beds and free breakfast. What else do you want? Sauna, jacuzzi, masseuse?

In sake of fair play, there was some people staying in American best inn and they were complaining about cleanliness but I haven't been there so I can't confirm or deny.

That's really silly. If you go to get ANY job, would you tell them that you want to work for them only "''till you find something better"?

Yes you should count on making $350/wk for next 3 months. So? I bet some of you didn't make that much in your last job!
11 hours of driving... are you bragging or complaining?

And what's wrong with protecting company's assets? These trucks are easy to steal and it happens all the time.

    Not anymore

Why would I plan on refusing a load? Unless I'm out of hours I'll take everything they'll throw on me.

    I don't mind... ;)

Trucking ain't for everyone. Obviously. Whatever company you'll chose, there will be something you won't like.
Why is there such a turnover in the trucking business? Because some people are just plain dumba$$es, some had wrong reasons for getting into it and the rest thought it'll be easy. And all combinations of those.

    some corrected facts,

2500 tractors on the road, about 3000 trailers. All tractors are 2005 or newer.

I got my CDL from my community college, took 12 weeks, but only cost me $1000.
Then I went to Stevens. Forced dispatch is a fact of life in the trucking industry, it is just not called that anymore. Refuse a load, go to the bottom of the dispatch board, and wait until your name gets back to the top...could be days depending on the area of the country you are in.

I signed no notes with Stevens, in fact they are paying me $25/wk for my schooling.

Stevens now has part ownership in FFE and sister companies. Stevens uses FFE's wharehouse.

They informed me of everything I needed before I arrived in Dallas...I did ask lots of questions first. I flew in and they reimubrsed me $200 for the flight. The hotels are a bit on the old side, but they are better than open barracks, a bed, a shower, and coffee and cereal for breakfast. You share the room with a total stranger.

If you are willing to work hard, use all of your available legal hours each day, they will keep you moving, and earning money. Yes the $350 per week for the first 2 months or more is tuff, but doable.

NYC is not as bad as everyone thinks...we have set routes in and out to each and every reciever...just plan on driving 15 miles per hour:)

Stevens plans on only 5 out of 50 drivers each week to stay longer than 1 year. So many people come into trucking, thinking it will be easy way to make money. It is not. It is work, takes up a lot of your time, and tuff on the family back home.

Stevens works for me...I average 2900 miles per week, and am in the NYC area every week with meat. Midwest to East coast and back.

    Sure I will.
I drove almost 1400 miles in the first 3 days, then we've been waiting for a load for almost 3 days and then I drove another 900 miles. (multiply by 2 for actual miles - my trainer drove half of the time)
That's 2300 miles for first week student. If I'd get paid for actual mileage, I'd make about $560 plus $52/day per diem. I don't know about you, but I'm fine with that.
Of course it could be better but it ALWAYS could be better - no matter how much you making at the time right? ;)

So far no complaints about Stevens. Everything they promised, they fullfilled.
A little bored while waiting but I don't mind that much. For the time being they pay me $350/wk no matter whether I'm sitting on my butt doing nothing or actually driving - and having time of my life.
    Try to beat that!

not to burst your bubble there, but 2300 miles * .26/mile is $598, which includes your per diem. They do not actually pay you an additional $52 per day, but use that amount to reduce the amount of taxes you pay, and important to Stevens, the amount of matching taxes they pay.

Other than that spoken like a true rookie in love with the job. Enjoy, learn as much as you can from your trainer, and from rolling down the road, as you will need it when you go solo.

No no my dear. I know some companies let you choose between getting your per diem on your paycheck or deduct it from your taxes at the end of the year. Stevens doesn't ask you. They'll give to you weekly. And no, it is NOT included in that .26/mile.

    Nothing wrong with that.
Not like I'm total n00b I've got experience driving straight trucks mostly locally. But OTR and big rigs are completely different ballgame.

stanko, you better check for what you will get paid is about 24 cents a mile plus 2 cents per mile per diem....there is no company that actually pays you $52 per day per diem, it is a way to cut company costs.

If you think you are getting $52 dollars per day, you are sadly mistaken, for stevens only pays 26 cents per mile, and that does include the per diem pay.

Driving a big rig is different than straight trucks. enjoy trucking, and check into that pay, and you will see the truth.

I see you haven't been there in awhile. Go in front and turn right and you enter the driver manager area. To the left is the planning and dispatch area. The brokerage offices were moved to another part of the building.
