That was one thing they made sure that you knew how to do when I went through orientation with them years ago before they were considered a "starter company." Then after my first winter driving with them in the Rockies I could nearly do it blindfolded. Put them on, get to a safe haven and park it until conditions improved.

There was one on 84 in Oregon outside of Arlington this past winter. They left the wrecked tractor sit at the top of an onramp for almost two weeks after that.

Seems to me that if you have to worry about whether they do a hair follicle test, you're doing something you shouldn't be doing in the first place. That said, I'm not understanding why the hair follicle test gets so many drivers up in arms. Explain?
Or maybe they just have sense enough to park it. LOL

All jokes aside, I've pretty much come to find that if I have to chain up, I shouldn't be on the road. I'll chain up to get out of trouble, but if I'm already parked, I won't chain up to get INTO trouble. No load is hot enough it needs to cool off in a ditch.
Chargebacks for idling? Do they at least have a reliable APU system?
So what if you run at night? No thanks, that's gonna be a pain in the ###.
You know, these companies are always crying that they need drivers so bad, but they do so much to annoy the piss out of the drivers they have. Then they wonder why they can't keep them. That's a *SPECIAL* kind of stupid.

Maybe so, but the one time I remember being routed over the Summit in bad weather (I've been fairly lucky, I guess), conditions flip-flopped between max chains, closed to semis, and closed, PERIOD, for at least four days.
I've run the midWest for the bulk of my career, and I've gone through Snoqualmie in bad weather, as well as driven through lake-effect from Erie on I-90 to the point I couldn't see the road and had to use the snow-covered guardrail for reference. I'm not afraid of snow, but snow, semis and mountains do not mix. I don't park it in these conditions because *I* can't drive in it -- I park it in these conditions because I know most OTHER people can't. And they will sue you regardless of the fact that THEY crashed into YOU.
Blame the sue-happy lawyer mentality for that one. True story -- drunk driver crosses the median and hits a semi head-on, family's lawyer says trucker is at fault for being there. It's not worth the liability.Last edited: Jun 12, 2017
