2015 D16 131k miles
ok so yesterday while going through Texas gift a low coolant alarm. Pulled over to the shoulder to check and add coolant but when I released the cap and released the pressure all the coolant rushed back into the tank. So my question is,
1. Why?
2. Dose this engine have an air pressure feed to the coolant system?
Granted it was hot in Texas at 106 coolant temp was at 200 degrees but after I released the pressure temp dropped to around 180. This is my first Volvo so be gentle lol

Ya it Sucks in Coolant from the Overflow Reservoir when you kill engine or it needs it."I WOULD VENTURE TO SAY" SORRY,I'm tryin to keep this this MUSKOGEE TERM "VENTURE TO SAY" IN THE ENGLISH ALPHABET" WE'LL I'D VENTURE TO SAY YOUR COOLANT TEMP SENSOR TOOK A DUMP".JMO
-
Yea but would it suck it down from max full to below the low coolant sensor while I'm driving Down the highway?
-
Na,dont think so...I Would think one of the hoses (next to the Def ) back by the fuel tank leaking...have you had fuel tank work? What does the seal on your cap on overflow look like? Its hard to say...Without Physically looking it over.Sounds like a leak though...If its sucking it down from Max Fill to warning Triangle? Everyday ? WTF?. YA,need to investigate further. ARE YOU ADDING COOLANT DAILY?
-
Many Questions...Is it 50/50 mix Water VS Antifreeze?. Do you smell a Pancake Syrup Smell Going Down the road? Does the Stop Triangle Beep at you going up 6° inclines?
-
It only happened once it is a 50/50 blend. It sucked it down then when I opened the tank it flowed back up to max again. That's why I asked if Volvo pressurized the tank. Wondering if I might have a bad check valve. No smell, was on flat ground at the time and did not happen when I got to a hill
UhOhh Thanks this. -
May just be Normal "Osmosis".You know when you Run The A/C or heat Daily...Eventually You have to add a Quart of Coolant Mix or so.The overflow tank is usually mounted higher than the engine and is a gravity feed.Lot of pressure when you shut off motor and just sort of "Sucks down some coolant". Check valve? Never heard of it.Yes,its a Pressurized Sealed System(according to the Spring in your Radiator Cap 13lb,16 lb,22lb or What have you.

yes on d 16 sometimes they do they have a solenoid that supplies a certain amount of air psi to cooling system only in 780,670,630 the 880 doesnt have it, probably from outside temp being so high the cooling system on the truck was going crazy just trying to keep up with it if its not an ongoing issue than dont worry to much about it, the only thing i could suggest is try to change the cap on the driver side of surge tank since this is the psi cap in that system thats what controls how much psi goes in the system sometimes they go bad again most likely im just guessing it would be from excessive outside temps
-
That is what I was thinking. I had heard that the d16 system was pressurized in the past but was not sure if that was the case on newer engines. Thank youKB3MMX Thanks this.

Is that common on the D16? I smell it on my D16 from time to time.. There is a pinhole on the top of my reservoir tank, but coolant never drops for what ever strange reason..KB3MMX Thanks this.
