Doesn't sound good for a "newby" like me, wondering if I should even bother trying to get a job driving, I'm only making $25/hr busing kids around, I don't mind the low wage for now. Maybe I can just go be a maid somewhere, heehee

Well I guess one of the differences is you probably aren't driving the bus for 10 hrs a day, so driving say a gravel truck for Mike Vail would hopefully get you more hours then driving a bus.
-
Oh ya, most definitely more hours with any other truck driving, school bus is split shift, 2 hrs morning and then again late after noon. One advantage is if we can take our bus home, save on gas driving to work. Just worried of not finding any work in this industry, was thinking of garbage truck too.

Pretty sure you could find a gravel truck job, there are a lot of companies looking, there real question is can you survive with that hourly wage? If you can then just go for it. You'll gain the experience if nothing else, and that may open other doors for you.

I'm in Alberta, hoping what you say is true in this province, that there are lots of companies looking. And ya, I have no problem making around $25/hr, it's actually the most hourly wage I've ever made, so I'm happy with it. And I don't have my own truck, so I'm not like others who need to make a certain wage that makes it worth it to use their own equipment. For me, $25/hr. is great when I can work 6-10 hours a day, I'll commute certain distances to get something with those hours. And I really do need the experience, so I'll take it to get my foot in the door.

I'm here in Calgary and just going by the number of ads out there. If you check out indeed.ca and search gravel truck jobs Calgary you will find a bunch. But again when your ready head over to Mike Vails website and apply online.

Have you worked for Mike Vail Trucking? I saw some posts on here how the company wants drivers to wash the trucks 3 times a week for free, no pay, slave labor maybe?? I know years ago gravel truck companies were begging school bus drivers to drive for them, not sure how it is now.
-
I hope I don't sound rude, I'm just trying to find out what you know, I just looked at the gravel truck jobs in Calgary on Indeed and can only find class 1 drivers, not too many (really only Mike Vail) class 3 positions on there. That's why I'm in decision of going for my class 1 or just see what happens with my class 2 Q endorsement which I still have to accomplish this summer.
-
No I haven't worked for Mike Vail, just know they are hiring, if you look further up this thread you'll see some positive things about Mike Vail as well. If I believed everything I read on the internet including forums like this one I'd stay locked up in my house worried that everyone is out to cheat me in some way. You really have to make the judgement yourself. Check kijiji for class 3 jobs as well. The Indeed.ca site changes every day so keep on eye on it.

Ok, thanks for the insite, I'm really looking forward to a career in this field, been contemplating it for awhile, just love to hear all that others have to say about this industry. You've helped me a lot, really appreciate it. I will keep looking and continue my education so that I can advance farther. Nothing like knowledge from experienced people. So much better than what I'm doing now !!
