Hi, found this thread searching google. My dad and i did an overhaul of a cummins ISX w/ EGR yr. 2004 engine and upon completing it, the engine seems to run fine but it is not cooling well at idle (we usually run idle speeds around 900 rpm's). Haven't taken it out to the streets or on any loads yet. My situation is very similar;
The temperature climbs pretty slow (or it seems that way to me as i am not a truck driver and it's unusual to me). When it gets warmed up, idle temperatures climb to about 200-210 aswell and then the fan kicks in and it drops the temp. down to 180-190 where is supposedly should be right?
Being that the fan helps drop temperature, i assume there is nothing wrong with it or the fan clutch or belt, etc. During our repairs we replaced crank. and all gaskets, orings, etc. involved. upon initial start of engine, we noticed a leak in the water/oil cooler (The long piece that attaches to passengers side of engine and has water radiator inside.) but that has since been fixed. No water leaks, no oil leaks. We replaced both thermostats aswell and cleaned the radiator with water and air.
Do you guys suspect that the issue here is with the water pump aswell or are there any other things i should check or suspect to be the cause of the temperature climb?
Any comments or suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks. -
My 13 587 Pete
doing the same. I can drive 500 miles no problem but if oh stop and idle for awhile now 190-210 comes down and up -
That is normal coolant temp range for. Fan comes on at 207 and temps will drop down to 190 and reclimb. 210 is not over heated.
ShooterK2 Thanks this. -
Agree. Although I don't like it, 210 is fine. I like seeing the temp a little less, so I kick the fan on around 200 and cool it back off. But 210 won't hurt anything. It's just a product of not getting any airflow across the radiator.

I agree too. I'd rather see 200 max as well. It's just easier on everything.

The truck I bought was a fleet truck. It has no manual fan switch. Sometimes it won't kick on until 212. I perfer the fan to kick on at 200 coolant temp it also did not do this until last weekShooterK2 Thanks this.

I think you said you used water to clean the fins on the radiator. If you have a chance, you might pull your AC condenser and air-to-air and take a air hose with a blow gun and clean those radiator fins real good, as well as the fins on the condenser and air-to-air.
It'll take some time but it's free and it just might fix it. I run the oilfield and we do this every so often. If we neglect it, it will sure heat up. -
Now theres light smoke comming from oil fill and dipstick

Any smoke from the blowby tube? It might be stopped up.
