Kenworth w900l 2006 cat c15 started smoking last night....white / blue with smell of fuel.
Took it to kenworth for diagnostic as not at home. They say iva 3 & 4 are reading low and that injector 4 needs replacing from their cut out test. ..maybe number 3 aswell.
My gut instinct and their opionion is to change all 6 whilst in there.
Our home shop who were going to do the work says don't bother just do the 2 bad ones.
Can I get peoples Opionions on the subject please.
    Thanks

I'm of the mindset that if the injectors only have a few hours on them, just change the bad ones. If they're getting up in hours I'd change them all plus possibly the injector harness and pass through connectors as well.

    EWV Thanks this.

Think we have put about 250-300k miles on since we've had the truck and the history was sketchy prior to us so that is part of what we were thinking.
Thank you we will go ahead and do them all.

My thoughts are that the smoke is usually caused by the faulty VVA, which should of thrown a code.
Injectors can be a hit and miss if going by the cylinder cut out test and the duration numbers are slightly lower than the rest...

It hasn't thrown any codes and no check engine lights etc.
We had the iva 3 & 4 replaced mid last year and the injector cups replaced beginning if this year.
There was no pre warning to this we just started her up last night and puff puff and she's not stopped dice. Runs and idles just fine it's the starting she coughs a bit on the crank then is ok...

Like others have said, if the injectors are only a couple of years old, I would just replace the bad ones. If they are original or 5 years or older, replace them all. I know this is expensive, but ultimately you want to keep your truck out of the shop. I can't tell you how many times we see someone come in for one injector on an older engine, and then 4 months later they are back for another one, and then a year later, back again. So three visits to the shop plus down time for something that could have been fixed once. Replace them all, have a complete top end set done and forget about for the next few years!

    EWV and SAR Thank this.

So an update. ....I was rally bothered by the fact I was told 3 times face to face that I needed the injectors replaced at tge 1st location but when I was given a written copy of the diagnosis injectors weren't even mentioned and they just reiterated needing injectors when I asked them about it.
Phoned the shop I usually go to who I trust and have never let me down...they said so long as she's running ok bring her here so I did.
By the time i got there a few hours later no smoke of any colour.
They ran every test they could and told me the injectors were fine but accuator 6 was bad and causing the problems.

Had to order the part and going in next week.

Anyone agree / disagree with this?
I trust these guys but the 2 diagnosis seem so different I'm not sure what to do...parts alone are $1000 for accuator.

This aside I've taken on board what everyone said about changing injectors and having a top end done....sort this issue and I will be on it thanks
