Me and my partner want to buy a new or used truck. I am looking at an automatic because of my right arm has problems. so whats the deal with automatics, are they better on gas mileage. Repair costs, safety. are they more expensive. we are going to be driving from pa to ca cross country. what would you recommend frightliner, pete, kenworth, or volvo and which model.
also what are the load rates for cross country deleivery for team drivers.

Yes they are more expensive to buy and service because they are manual transmissions with computerized shifting controls added but they are also more fuel efficient . Google Eaton automatic transmissions .
No real info on the type of truck or rates can be given unless specific info is given on the type of load .

can someone please explain this to me ,"It's not wise to go beyond 8 percent grades with an automated transmission because it "would need to
be in manual mode," says Jeffrey Sprinzer, Eaton's
senior applications engineer. If the driver does not
know to lock it into a lower gear"

i have not spoken with nayone on the new generation autos out there like the I-shift from volvo, but i do know the older autos out there have had issues with not shifting correxctly up hill, wich is not a good thing in the cascades or rockies.

i dont think the new one should have any problems. my main question is the resale value or the trade in value. meaning if i buy '08 autoshift then want to trade it in for an '09 auto will i loose alot of money. i didn't ask any dealer because they will say anything to sell.

From the questions you are asking it is obvious you have no knowledge of trucks and buying one would be a bad idea . No one trades a truck after a year . Of course you'd loose a lot of money trading that soon . The truck will probably depreciate over $20,000 as soon as you drove it off the lot . You need a spreadsheet figuring cost of operation and spread depreciation over 4 or 5 years . You need to know your true cost of operation to know what rates are acceptable . Going into this blind is certainty of failure within months .
