They're basically paying for it but you have to stay with the company for at least a year but if you don't you will have to pay them back, so I'm not certain if it's private.

private means you are not tied to any company.
It usually means you pay upfront for the classes. If there is a trucking company paying for your school in exchange for you working for them a certain amount of time... then it is not considered "a private school". This also means that you are under legal contract with them. And most of the time the pay is less than it would have been if you had of gone through a "private school" (like a community college). Just be careful cuz there are some private school scams out there also. -
Have you thought about asking Fed-ex (HR) if they would pay for your school? Some companies will pay for college classes/ degrees if what you are going for will contribute to the company. Like you being able to drive more than just the trucks you are driving now. Just an idea. Not sure if fed-ex has a program like this or not. Amazon has this for their employees up to a certain amount, once the employee has been with the company for a year. I hear Starbucks does also.

Well I will be tied to the company which is fine I can commit myself for a year longevity has never been my problem if the company approves me. I have a speeding ticket that I got in January I'm not sure how many miles I was over but I'm nervous now. It's the only thing on my mvr. I've also asked Fedex and because social work doesn't pertain anything in the company all they can offer me is a scholarship that's not guaranteed. I've been a driver for most of my jobs and I have a cdl permit for Illinois which was after my ticket but I'd rather not work in Illinois at the moment but I will do what I must if my mvr isn't acceptable.

If you have the ABILITY to get your CDL without company SPONSORED programs..... Do it... Because you will literally be a slave for at least a year..BrownEyedGirI and Danny N Angel Thank this.

If you only have 1 ticket you will be fine. They don't want any more than 3 in a 3 year period and no more than 1 accident in 3 years.
A scholarship does not have to be paid back, it never hurts to try... you just might get it. I was mainly thinking about them paying for CDL school at a community college. I went to Shawnee College when I lived in IL. Not sure what part of IL. You live in. Also you can live (home base/not move ) in IL and still work/ get hired with a company out of state. -
If you already have your permit, when does it expire??? You will need to finish a CDL school (private or trucking) before it expires. Unless you have a friend who has a manual 18 wheeler with a trailer and they would take you to the DMV and let you use their truck to take your CDL. But this is a VERY BAD CHOICE, cuz it will be extremely hard to get a trucking job with no experience and no school.

I totally agree.

Also look into this: if you have an IL CLP... and go to a different state for CDL training... will you need a CLP in that state??? That would mean you will have to take all the test over.

There's nothing wrong with trucking company cdl schools. You get a cdl and a job.
Not everyone can qualify for loans, etc. for private schools.
