Why don't you look at the load board and make some calls and find out yourself?

You were in my neck of the woods. Lots of furniture here, very hard to score big money on those loads. They will let it set on the dock usually before paying high rates. I hauled one last week for 3.80 per mile on 761 miles, they were in a bind, usually never go that high on furniture loads...

I am leased to a company that provides expedited service to the oil industry. The rates can be over $10 a mile for short hauls or as little as $3 a mile for long haul. That's the good news.

The bad news is you might need to deadhead all the way home, cutting that rate in half. The OTHER bad news is your truck gets beat to #### on dirt roads.

Conversation overheard at the J Denny's in LaSalle IL last night while I managed to eat their Pot Roast soup-mush type deal:

"They need to take all these Muslims and shoot 'em all in the head! Just take em all out. And ya know, I wish they'd bring back burnin people at the stake!"

I had thought maybe I was a little on the extreme side of Libertarian, but this guy just made me look like a flaming leftist. I didn't bother joining in on the Convo, which was really one sided, as the other fella, who was there before me, just sat and nodded his head. No idea if he knew the guy or not. I don't think he did. The guy came in, sat down, and started talking up a storm.

One day a few years back, I was eating at the TA and there were quite a few truckers sitting around the bar eating, and one fella kept going on about how it's his company's fault he's fat and unhealthy, and that he has to eat at places like the TA and how he has to be a driver because he can't find another job. It's everyone else's fault but his.

Wednesday late afternoon I was loading at some facility down south of Chattanooga, one pimply faced kid who drive for Knight, told me about how his dad went out and bought 7 trucks and lost it all within a year. "We thought it would be old school, where we'd get some of them older drivers who could do mile after mile! It wasn't like that at all! So now we had to go work for Knight. But it ain't too bad, I get $900 a week!"

He was on the exact same run I was on, 350 miles loaded. "My appointment is at 3pm, I told dispatch that it ain't happenin, ain't gonna make it." Mind you, it was 4pm the day before, he was waiting on paperwork, and his appointment was the next day. Mine was at 8am. I made it 5 mins early. Lol. Now granted, if I were on ELogs, it would have been 11am or so, since I didn't get out of there until 6pm, and it was through the gorge and then up winding state highways. But even if I had gotten out the same time he did, I could have legally made it by 9am. But nope, 3pm is out of the question. Lol.

Sitting in Minooka empty waiting for my boss to come pick me up for dinner. I met him once briefly back in late Feb. If he don't foot the bill...

I hope I don't have to go to Chicago tomorrow for a load. I've made it 6 months without having to load or unload near that hell hole. Except once I went from IA to near Milwaukee. I still cringe thinking about how I had to go into WI.

Ah that old "I really can't figure out why they are so bad at this..." moment. I've been there many a time with other brokers. Just be grateful that's your competition. Seriously when you wonder why people seem surprised when you don't suck think back to that moment.

Thanks BoyWander. A very good thread, it's answered most of my questions about O/O and trucking in general. Even when the thread wanders a bit, it's all good and relevant (mostly) to what you are doing. Good luck and Happy Trails. I may see you out on the road some time soon :)

I'd think thrice before you go out and do it.

Nobody knows what's going to happen with elogs. I might see my revenue go down 20%. That would be a huge hit.

    Lepton1 and MarkH129 Thank this.

If you do 5 loads per week now, but will be doing only 4, all you need is each of that 4 loads to pay extra $150-250 and you will be all right. Hopefully we will see increase in rates once capacity tightens
