I'm from Canada, so I can only speak from where I live...
In this Province, you can get a temporary operating permit for truck and trailer. It's essentially a piece of paper that you tape to the windshield, and another one on the back of the trailer, if you have one.
I can run all of North America on this T.O.P.
However, it is assumed that you will be running it as a "not for hire" private truck, since the insurance would be null and void the minute you take on a load for pay, and you'd pretty well be screwed should you try to run for profit.
This allowed me to get the truck home, to run it to a couple mechanical shops, the sign shop, etc... to basically get it ready to be put on "for hire."
I'm not sure about the US, but certainly there must be something similar.
Of course, pre-trips, log-books (if necessary), and HOS rules and regs should probably all be followed, as a TOP doesn't exempt you from those, as far as I know.

I bought a truck from a farmer, so it already had 'not for hire' on it. I put a sign on each door that said 'in transit' and put my mc number on there as well. Never had any problems.

3 day trip insurance. Depending on how far away it is take a buddy with a CDL and drive home on the weekend to avoid conflict as most scales will be closed.

I'll be headed to the DMV monday and see what luck and help they can give me. Still waiting on rate quotes as i caught everyone on late friday and they all have to call back Monday.
Does anyone know of some decent insurance outfits for temp insurance. Guy who owned truck said he was charged around $140 bucks for his temp. I can afford that as long as it isn't something crazy like a grand or more just for temp.
Thinking at this point a bill of sale and clean title in my hand signed over to me is enough. Just not sure of any permits. My wife is looking forward to the drive back home so the paying someone to move it us just out the window and I don't let anyone drive my equipment. Especially when its a 1200+ mile trip that i cant have the radio off on and listen to the truck for any problems that need fixing.bulldawg trucker Thanks this.
