I wish you luck but see what is mentioned but not really realized at driver level is that the insurance company dictates who gets hired.
A lot of these companies who hire crap drivers (believe me 15 over isn't bad) are what is called self-insured and dealing with one accident with a self-insured company, I think this should be really outlawed because of the games they play. Because their underwriters are more lax, they can actually hire these crap drivers and shuffle them through that revolving door if they don't work out.
Potential new trucker, few questions

They'll never be able to automate beverage delivery, foodservice, or LTL P&D work (among others).

They will change the system. Think outside the box.
In 1994 I delivered to new print plant in Franklin Park Il. where robots handled all the newsprint coming off trailer and placed it on racks. These are 800 lbs rolls. Robots read the bar codes for placement. Robots also fetched rolls for print. No more waking up forklift driver and this was 26 years ago. I have a friend who is a computer engineer whose job is creating programming to eliminate warm bodies on the line -
Some labor bots working within a static environment is very different than the complexities of inner city driving. I think even the most hopeful of number crunching billionaires don't expect to have empty cabs anytime this century, at least in major cities and at shippers and receivers. So who here is eager to fill the new job role consisting of a minimum wage earning, moving closet that stops to hand you the controls for only the "fun" bits?Last edited: Jul 23, 2017
Jazz1 and Bob Dobalina Thank this. -
I know there are automated ways to load a truck (with robot forklifts moving product on standard-size pallets), build skids (stacking boxes of the same size), and (eventually) get it down the road to other warehouses.
My point is until a robot can run a 2-wheeler and hustle some kegs into a bar or run food into a restaurant, or block traffic to blindside off a busy street into a lot not meant for trucks, then operate a pallet jack to get the freight delivered, those jobs I mentioned will be safe.Jazz1 Thanks this. -
The system has to change to accommodate automation. The new self loading garbage trucks are just the tip of the iceberg. I'll get back to you in 30 years

I talked to a few companies today and got the go ahead. I am going to pay for my own school still however to give myself an advantage over contracts and lower pay. The $2500 cost is better than the contracted $5000 cost most company schools get people for. Took my DOT physical and drug test today as well as a new prescription for glasses. Hopefully I'll make the cutoff date next monday or I'll have to wait until August 21st to start. Its getting kind of close but I think I can pull it all together.
Bob Dobalina and TurtlesLikeI Thank this.
