I came into L.A. area early this morning. The descent down the grapevine was packed with trucks on the SB & NB sides. I'm talking areas that have BIG painted notices on the freeway itself, EMERGENCY PARKING ONLY.
Same thing on the 210 EB...
It seems like a very unsafe practice to me. I won't do it.
In fact, I remember a wreck last year on the I-5 SB side descent where a truck plowed into another truck parked on the side right there, one of them burnt to the ground.
I'm seeing more trucks pulled over all over the road these days. Not sure whether it's directly connected to ELOGS or not, but I suspect some of it is attributable. -
- My $0.02 the the biggest whiners I seem to find, are people that have never been on them. As I said before in other threads, I am neither for or against ELD's. And with the understanding that they are not a perfect fit for every niche of the industry, they are not as bad as one might think. I have been out here for a long time in different types of operations. And I have run on both paper and ELD. I have lost $0.00 dollars do to using ELD. As far as the privacy thing goes we no longer really have any left anyway cell phones come to mind.
Western flyer and driverdriver Thank this. -
Elogs will FORCE you to think (hard at first) exactly how you drive. There are a lot of tools available to help with accomodations for the evening. My favorite is TruckerPath.
No one is going to be in agreement 100% on Elogs. Would I use paper if it was offered now? That's a hard one, maybe after the mandate goes in effect. -
I came to my current company as a Refresher and I've been here just about 8 months. So far, E-logs have not been a problem and I even kind of like not have to mess with the paper log.
It mostly comes down to communication and bringing attention to issues as early as possible. If I'm given a load I need to say if I can do it and if not, we can all figure out another plan or have me pick it up and coordinate a trailer swap.
I will say may most recent trip was kind of weird. I kept informing dispatch the load was really tight on time and didn't hear back. I was able to watch my E-log 70 rule counting down againt my Rand McNally ETA and knew I kept holding a leeway of 20 minutes. It stayed that way for a long time and I did manage delivery before my 70 ran out.
I could look at that as annoying or as a tool that gave me helped me evaluate my time legally. It's weird, but I'll still take it over scrounging up time redoing paper logs.Dharok, driverdriver, #1don and 1 other person Thank this. -
I don't mind the elogs, I mind the hours of service. I wish I could work how I see fit and not because of a federal law I have to follow. Can't wait to leave the industry all together....
Accidental Trucker and win-some-loose-less Thank this. -
Any time I hear someone complaining about them in the truck stops, most guys are looking for anyone that will listen, had one the other night in the ta in Brookville pa that was trying to get me to agree with him. When I wouldn't be got all pissed off, called me a steering wheel holder and that I was a pathetic excuse for the future of the industry. I just told him that is a shame he feels that way, ordered my dinner to go and then left.
In my opinion no one wants things to change because then that means we have to change, makeep the rules work for you -
11 hours driving, 8 hours sleeping, 16 hours instead of 14 , total 70 hours instead of 60 and 34 hours restart.

One thing Canada has right. Canadian rules or die!
Accidental Trucker Thanks this. -
Just do away with to 60/70 limits or have them be optional by the carrier if they choose to run like that internally.
This will make 60% of the biggest HOS problems go away and really won't impact "safety". Easy peesy.
This would probably improve safety by not regularly putting busier drivers in the messed up situation of "waiting for midnight" to pick up hours.
No more shutting down early after only running 4 hours (running recap hours) and while you're fully rested but can't run while weather and roads are still good ... come midnight, they've deteriorated to crap
Teams can run much more effectively.
This would also help to take some pressure off the problem of limited truck stop parking.
Better paychecks for drivers where the miles are there. Same number of drivers in fleet can produce more revenue, if they're so inclined.Last edited: Aug 26, 2017
