Oh wow, you know I have never ever been told that before and now hummm I must know the answer myself so I will definately ask my boss as well. I would say if its just a quick few minute questions then it would not interrupt the sleeper break, however if it ends up to being that long dragged out check then on-duty. But that's my common sense answer not factual answer
Im silly today ok! Just this time change has me all messed up I guess

My point in asking is what if a team gets checked by a strict DOT officer anytime even within a few days after crossing the border . He'll know you crossed and know you had to come out of the bunk . It won't matter if it was 5 or 10 minutes . You interrupted your 8 consecutive hours . You can't put it on line 1 either .
-
Since when do you have to log 15 minutes for a 5-minute interruption?
-
when I first started many moons ago pocatello id got me. I didn't have a 53' trlr permit (back then you had to get 1 before you crossed the state line and when he asked I got flustered and handed them the wrong book! Course one thing led to another and after he searched my truck and found the one I thought I was handing him (plus a couple more) he wrote on the inspection form " even if you believe the one that was closest to correct driver has logged 82 hours" only log book ticket I've ever gotten and one I won't soon forget!

dont undrestand the question to well . it kind of sounds like common sense . how can you be in the sleeper crossing the border ? if driver was in driving status and did not log the inspection he is only cheating himself .the ones who put themselves off duty or sleeper in a location and are stopped going back to that location are the ones who are the violators .example : your log states on tuesday you are in brooklyn ny off duty , but you are insp going to brooklyn from the bronx on wednesday hoping to get a couple extra loads or trips without using your hours . log one trip run three . why lie for the company and let them run the #### out of you . find a job that pays well for running legit .

I'm going to start an ESL class for you guys.

Although he didn't explain it completely, RickG was referring to a team operation crossing the international border; Driver A is driving and Driver B is in the sleeper. Customs requires all occupants of the truck to show themselves when crossing the border. Technically then, this interrupts Driver B's logging on line 2, and RickG is wondering if some hard-### DOT inspector is going to write him up for not logging the border crossing and re-starting his sleeper berth.
This is a clear example of how stupid the HOS are sometimes. Same thing with the idea that the second driver can't be sitting in the passenger seat and logging off duty. It's clear that the people that wrote (and enforce) the rules never actually tried staying in the sleeper berth of a moving truck for 10 hours. -
Expedite husband/wife teams really hate these rules . Some women say they ride in the passenger seat unless they approach a scale . I warn them there are many DOT officers sitting in the median that would also spot them in the passenger seat .
O.K. what would happen here ? The team is being pulled over . The wife grabs her logbook and marks the last 1/2 hour on line 4 . No violation , is there ? -
you are absolutely correct
-
So even if it takes 5 minutes and doesn't require a change of duty status, it'd interrupt the break?
-
If you come out of the bunk for 5 minutes you changed your duty status .
I passed a level 1 in Ontario but the inspector said I should have logged passing through Customs . Why ? It only took 10 minutes and I stayed behind the wheel which is considered driving .
