Trailer valve problem!!

Having an issue with my red trailer valve on dash. Let me start by saying it's an older 359 truck. Truck valve works fine , drove it home after purchase. I do almost all my own mechanic work that I can, but this is got me puzzled! When I push red trailer valve in( truck @ operating psi) the valve is sponge, not a soft sponge like when your air pressure is low but like a pressurized sponge!
