In the Midwest, at this time, it is relatively easy to get 2.5 - 3 dol per mile for a dry van ( 300 -500 mile runs ). But it was not so easy a few months back. But to find find a work for 2 dol a mile, by that I mean to lease on and they pay you 2 dol a mile on all miles... hard to believe, unless they let you use their loadboard and you are percentage based. But it is not easy to find a carrier that would let you use their loadboard and allow you to find your own freight in their name. That's understandable too.
What's the going rate for an o/o

They might not realize rates can change within a few hours. If it's 16:45 on Friday and load picks up Saturday 9 am they will pay me whatever I want (within reason).

Let's say you are a carrier. You get $1.60-$2 per mile on 2500-3000 weekly miles moving dry van freight. Give 80% to the o/o, so he gets $1.28-$1.60
The guy above is offering $1.40 with fuel surcharge included. So he is pretty much on the same scale as thousands of other carriers running brokers freight.
The guy does not deserve that much hate -
For example my two trucks average over $2 on 2500 miles, but company with 10 trucks, which parks next to me, averages $1.60 on 3000-3500 miles. Their drivers are hungry for miles, so their dispatchers have a different mindset compare to what I do

One of my favorite phrases... "We chase money, not miles".jlafume Thanks this.

My carrier(30 company trucks and 10 owner ops) wants to work with me to get my own freight. Actually taking a day next week to go over the load boards and get my access. Then in about another month he plans to visit a couple of people I have in mind for direct accounts near me. Even told me if I ever decide to go on my own I can take my customers with me. At this point I am not even considering my own numbers, although that was one of my 1 year goals just a few months ago.
By the way I am percentage and did that 2.60 a mile on a little over 2000 miles. $5400 gross. The key is finding a carrier that will be a partner and not just run you into the ground. They are out there.JimmyWells and JL of Indiana Thank this. -
Like a needle in a haystack though.

That's good. Brokered dry van freight?

Brokered flat bed. On top of that my dispatcher is having to get two loads everywhere so I can run with my buddy who is training me so I know we could do better if we could separate. He is good at it tho and has a lot of connections. Been a heck of a week and a half. I'm exhausted. Lol
We have one or two irregular direct customers but they have some leads on some real good direct stuff. I'm happy right now but know there is still more on the table. The sky is the limit.
