Granted, there are truckin' companies where a Big truck truck driver
can make descent money running legal. But there'll always be those who
figure they can make MORE money if they cook the book to increase
    their miles.
    Greed?
    Temptation?
    Necessity?
    Who knows?

    Give SOME folks an inch
and they'll drive an extra mile.

I would be veeeeery suspicious of anyone on this forum (or any other trucking forum) who would defend OTR trucking. The turnover rate is so high, truck dispatchers, driver recruiters, and others are coming onto this forum, pretending they're either drivers or wives married to an OTR driver, trying to implement damage control, and prevent prospective newbie drivers from looking to other career options besides trucking. Talk to any local hourly paid driver, and they'll tell you they'd rather quit trucking for good than to go back into OTR. The pay may be good if you live in a rural small town, where the cost of living is lower; but if you live in a metropolitan area near a major city, the pay can't compare to what you'd earn doing local hourly, and getting paid overtime ‼ You don't see Walmart Distribution or any grocery supermarket chain putting ads for drivers ‼ That's because these are the most coveted positions.

Any prospective newbies reading these threads to consider whether they should get into trucking, just go to the nearest truck stop and talk to the drivers. Pay close attention to how long they've been pulling for a company. Look at how they pause to answer your question when you ask "are you content working for this company?" Observe a lot of drivers are hispanic, or speak with an accent. The federal government is addressing the driver shortage (turnover) issue by legalizing the Mexican license and granting HB1 working visas for immigrant truckers from 3rd-world nations to come to the USA and drive OTR. These immigrant truckers are willing to work for less, and the trucking industry needs more American white drivers to hide the fact that OTR is slowly becoming dominated by immigrants who can do the job for less.

If you want to become an OTR trucker, I strongly advice you learn Spanish, because some warehouses in California will take longer to load/unload your truck if you don't know the language. Their policy is "No habla español ?? No servicio rapido ‼" If you don't speak Spanish, we don't give fast loading/unloading service ‼ :biggrin_2555:

If you are trying to imply that I am a dispatcher or recruiter, you couldn't be more wrong. If you had a bad experience, that's your thing. I am the daughter of a driver, wife of a driver, and retired driver myself. The retirement is not by choice, it is due to a hereditary back problem that prevents me from driving any longer.

Also, in case you have not noticed, there are plenty of drivers on here that do recommend that new drivers go to a truck stop and talk to drivers. Not everyone lives close enough to a truck stop to do that without spending a lot of gas money. This forum offers those people an opportunity to hear the good and bad of the industry.

You don't see Walmart DC's advertising because a lot of their freight is actually moved by companies like Werner and others. Walmart does have their own trucks, but you need a minimum of at least 3 years to even think about applying with Walmart directly. The grocery chains don't need to advertise because those are the gravy runs that a lot of drivers want, so they have plenty of applications on file when they do have an opening.

The dispatchers and recruiters end up tipping their hands around here, at which time the mods know how to deal with those types of people.

Many, many industries in California are rapidly becoming Spanish-speaking only. Believe what you want, but I am a happy trucker's wife. No, driving OTR hauling groceries around might not be his dream job, but once he gets a few years experience he can get that dream OTR job. I don't lie to anyone on here, I tell it like we experience it; the good, the bad, and the ugly.
