I think a large percentage of the near retirement aged guys have kept themselves on paper until the last minute. I don't doubt that there will be a huge smack in the face to the trucking industry come January. For those of us who are forced to comply and cannot quit, the wages will likely go up enough that we can start telling carriers that we can't drive and we'll sit a lot more than we used to. Making the same pay for 2/3 as much work as we used to as the trucking industry will likely be as starved for drivers as it ever was. Another smack in the face... this is just my guess, but really, I'd like to be both productive to my employer AND well paid personally.

The difference is I am the carrier. I can't just have another driver repower it. I pickup and delivery everything myself. I guess I will get really good at driving tired. Seeing as I am too dumb to do it the safe way, guess I've been doing it all wrong.

Here is a nice safe webpage that shows a amusing video (I like the desk hopping...)

And a simple chart about what it does to your body.

    The information is here.

This is what just one can of Red Bull does to your body

    Go eat.

Bob tail to a bowling alley. Or something nice it's only evening. I once went into the Baltimore Lyric House for a symphony. I was not too welcome there, but they figured a trucker must really be cultured to take in a bit of beethoven in jeans. =)

You have a couple hours to kill find something enjoyable to do. It goes without saying. Ive done quite a bit of karting. Twin engines are a favorite, they are monsters. Even near the sea they used small V hull boats for that type of racing.

Enjoy your evening. You will have been unwound and ready to go to work when it's time.

At it again... had a 16 hour break at home beginning 6 hours after i woke up, not bad. I got 5 hours of sleep towards the beginning of that 16 hour break. I'm on a 13 hour turn around again, but started late due to DPF filter problems. Slip seating with another drivers truck today. Got tired 3 hours into my drive, stopped and slept 3 hours. Now I'm well rested but it's doubtful I'll be sleepy enough to get much sleep during my 10 hour break. I'll have to take one tho because I stopped to sleep 3 hours. I imagine I'll feel sleepy again shortly before I get home on line 3 after my 10 hour break. I've heard people talk about the importance of sleeping at night. I think n darkness just makes it easier too sleep once you get tired tho. Daylight helps keep me alert while sleepy better than coffee or energy drinks. This is the real science behind it. It's Just the way light effects you. I can fix that problem with a cab curtain tho. Your mind knows when it's daytime tho, and there's always a part of you that'd like to get out into life during the day. Anyways, today is another day the HOS regs makes it difficult to drive alert. 3 times this week.

If you are sleepy, then from my experience being sleepy out there with a 18 wheeler it's worse than being a simple drunk. You might wake up in the drunk tank next morning wondering what in the world? Then be told you are facing 30 to life because you took out 4 kids.

My suggestion to you is relatively simple born of hard earned expereince.

If you are sleepy and tired or somewhere in between. Get a rest. If it turns into a nap? Great. IF it turns into a proper overnight sleep? Awesome.

Just keep an eye on your ETA trip appt time.

There is a medical condition called Narcolepsy you do not ever want to be formally diagnosed with this inability to stay awake in the day time like most everyone else. If you want some amusing videos such as tree cutters + Narcolepsy.. you tube has them. It's not funny behind the wheel at 70 mph.

A trick I use when it is night and you have a long drive ahead and you are in the zone of I am a bit tired but not tired enough to sleep. Do not look at any clocks. You are just driving along and it is dark. If you focus on "dang it is 3 am" you will think yourself into sleep mode. Don't count the mile posts, just go along and don't let yourself do a countdown of how far you have to go.

Sometimes if I'm under the gun and must use all my hours to get where I'm going but feel like it would be so nice to lie down, I will do so and shut my eyes, no alarm. Many times I went into deep REM sleep then woke up and got back in the saddle feeling good. Look at ELD, it says 18 minutes Sleeper. So didn't really lose any time against on time delivery but did manage to get a micro burst of good sleep. Napoleon I believe came up with this strategy for his troops.

I wont take naps because I need to be sleepy for my 10 hours. If I take a nap before my 10 hours, I am going to be awake in my truck during my 10 hours and that right there is enough to make me sleepy before I even begin my day.

The people that made these rules should be locked in a closet for 10 hours every day when they aren't ready to sleep and see how rested they feel. That is pretty much what this is.

I am 3 weeks into over the road and I've found the logs harder than I thought they would be to deal with. Parking is second hardest but that is related to hos. I've had to go without showers due to parking issues and when I don't have a shower that is more fatiguing to me than anything else.
