This story brings back a memory, but it involves newspapers, not junk and trash. As a boy, I visited my grandmother in Ontario in about 1952. She and her husband visited an old man probably one Sunday afternoon each month. This old man saved newspapers. He had every newspaper he ever read bundled and stacked in all of his rooms. The place looked like the inside of a semi trailer at a school paper drive.

The old folks were reading the Bible by the light of an oil lamp, and I was also sitting with them. As a city boy, I knew nothing about oil lamps. I reached over and turned up the wick. You would have thought I pulled the pin on a grenade the way they all hollered and turned the wick back down. That old man's home was a real fire trap, but we were all lucky that day.

This is one of the really sad things about growing old. Particularly if you don't have kids or close friends who are willing to take responsibility for you when the mind starts going.

You see this a lot. Often you will see it with an elderly person who has so many animals that they can not possibly care for them. I've seen houses where old folks took in strays to "keep them from starving." But due to mental conditions, then had the strays not only starving, but living in filth and total deprivation.

This is a terrible thing to see. It is a terrible thing for the friends/relatives to have to deal with. But it is way to often a fact of life.

    AfterShock and Baack Thank this.
