I watched it for the umpteenth time last night. Of all the films that portray truckers as bad guys, or in this case a maniacal killer, this tops the list. Second and third are Joyride and Breakdown.

Still it's one of my old favorites. I was reading that Dennis Weaver used to say he watched it a couple times a year "Just to remember what I did"

Im going to have to do some movie watching. Starting with Fail Safe and then working through "The Duel" I once owned a very precise accurate model of the movie semi I think it was a 289? Anyhow... The modeler that built it missed to some degree a apprecioative market.

Next up will have to be very specific trucking video gaming that was pretty.. erm competition among the drivers and gets em going. I'll be first on this high road before you. OH YEA? *50 dollar bill hits the game, Pull out that 50 you fool put it there. Anyone else want in this stupid game?

Several more want in, some pull out note pads tokeep time score.

I think for me that would be a last burst I suppose before the star burned out as far as gaming as competition among truckers, with ergo a trucking game of some quality.

Just need to build a realistic tractor with a proper 13 speed you can split if you need to.

According to Wikipedia, the truck in Duel was a 1955 Peterbilt 281. Spielberg wanted to use a conventional rather than the cabovers that were prevalent at the time because the long nose looked more menacing. The truck was found in a scrap yard and outfitted with a new engine and transmission and made to look as shabby as possible.

The multiple license plates have been commented on by some movie buffs as suggesting that the driver was a serial killer and had played his vicious game all over the country. But of course, multiple plates were common on interstate vehicles during the 60s and 70s.

In between takes, the special effects crew would apply dirt, mud and bugs to the truck and chemicals were added to the fuel to create excess smoke.

Was the sound of the truck authentic in the movie or was the sound edited ? Cause at times it sounds like a different truck during different scenes

The engine noise was probably dubbed. You're right, at times it sounds like a living thing. And animal like roar. Also, the car Dennis Weaver drove was a 1971 Plymouth Valiant. Director Steven Spielberg was not particularly concerned about what model. He just wanted a low profile late model vehicle. He chose the color red so it would stand out in the desert.

David Janssen was considered for the lead. But he was regarded as "too rugged" Weaver was perfect with his "everyman" type of personality.

Great movie. The old primer red truck did look menacing....and awesome for an earlier rig. Big T gives two thumbs up.
