I buy 2 of everything, too...1 for the toolbox on the truck (so I have it with me if/when I need it), and the other for the toolbox in the shop (so I don't have to dig it out of the toolbox on the truck). The way I tend to abuse the hell out of tools, it comes in handy doing it that way because when (not if) I break one of them, I've got another to finish the job.
what a day to be a owner op

5g for a nice toolbox. 5g for ecm scanner for cars. Then obd2 comes out. Yearly updates weren't cheap either. I can see 30g being spent on tools through snap on. And that's for cars.

I have said it before, the problem with trucks breaking down in North America is most off the time not a truck problem but finding a shop that can actually fix the problem in a reasoneble timeframe without doing the repair x amount off times.spyder7723 Thanks this.

Oh boy I thought the camshaft for my car was expensive. That cam is almost the value of the car! Good luck op

Most mechanics that work at a shop don't personally buy or own speciality tools like scanning diagnosic equipment, liner presses, ball joint presses, bearing roll in caps, etc. Those are owned by the shop and the techs sign them out as needed. And anyone that spends 5 grand on a box is a freaking moron.
Besides which ecm diagnostic software is not 5k. When i priced it for my detroit it was just under 1500. The yearly subscription was another 600 or so. cummins was similarly priced.Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
If you worked for a dealer probably. A lot of freaking morons spent 5g or better for a box. My box was 2500 and is crammed full of tools. Some morons even bought their own ecm equipment. which was around 5g at that time and yearly subscriptions were 1500 i beleive. Shops wouldn't buy the equipment. People damage or steal. Even the counties would send their vehicles to the dealers for computer diagnostics. And other shops for various other work like alignments.
As for ball presses and all that other stuff. That was usually a dedicated shop for such s pecialty work. Makes no sense to buy expensive equipment for work very seldom performed.
Diagnostics for semi's. I've been told by a few shops the software alone is 10G. -
My box was about $11k but I got it half off through student pricing. If it wasn't 50% off I wouldn't have bought it.

For $11k, it better have come with a pony motor to help move it around, lights, stereo, mini-fridge, and a slide-out BBQ grille.1951 ford, spyder7723 and crb Thank this.

Boxes back in the 90's weren't cheap. The roller bearing came out shortly before i retired. I can't imagine snap on or mac or matco prices today.

Maybe for multiple copies it is. I can buy the the software for my DD for less than a grand, but has a yearly fee of around $700. Just don't have any trouble out of this engine to justify it.spyder7723 Thanks this.
